“Readings in a Face”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --
The men sat around the campfire,
that cool and darkened night.
Each holding back his thoughts,
though each the face of fright.
For each knew that tomorrow,
into battle they would go.
Each fearing that death awaited,
and was in their face to show.
They spoke of their loved ones,
so distant, far away.
And of some joyous moments,
as others, they knelt to pray.
Some there were the faces,
of boys still in their youth.
A few even underage,
none other to know the truth.
These were the grim faces,
the enemy looked upon.
Many to give of their lives,
families to grieve they on.
