“Lady in Gray”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --
Sarah laid there dying,
upon the battlefield.
The evidence of she a woman,
the shot blown clear her shield.
Her bosom it was bleeding,
blood of scarlet red.
To see her strength decaying,
knew you soon, she’d be dead.
Her uniform of gray now tattered,
it soiled and caked with death.
Soon all would be over,
she to draw a final breath.
A Union soldier in passing,
caught sight her lying there.
Covered her with his blanket,
with respect and loving care.
Was only this very morning,
this fighting lady fair.
Fought beside her dying husband,
now his bed of death to share.
