“Granddad Remembered”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --
A grandson looks upon the ground,
where heroes brave once fell.
Finds his mind transfixed in time,
cast by this place in spell.
Visions of the past storm back,
as though he too were there.
He feels the fear and agony,
his granddad was to bear.
The sounds of the cannon retort,
the muzzle loaded shot.
The yell of charging soldiers,
the cries of the dying lot.
The aftermath of battle,
the bodies strewn all about.
The buzzards circling on high,
soon dinner there no doubt.
Suddenly snapped back in years,
to this day and age.
How tearful the remembrance,
the battle that herein rage.
