“The Coward”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyrigght 2000 --
Therein a rain soaked trench,
laid a soldier he unmaimed.
Cried, “Lord forgive me,
my daddy’s name I’ve shamed”.
“During the heat of battle,
I deserted my post”.
“Now I hide as a coward,
more fearful than most”.
A flash of deadly lightning,
the thunder it roared down.
He thought he was dead,
until he turned around.
The enemy was coming,
the direction was his way.
He stood with his weapon,
here he was to stay.
After the raging encounter,
he was found mortally dead.
As were six of the enemy,
he had so earlier dread.
