“Blood and Guts”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --

The air was full of cannon shot,
the retort deafened the ear.
Smoke hid the noonday sun,
bayonet encounterment was near.

Blood laid deep in puddles,
the bodies blown apart.
Chain, glass, and nails,
flesh, bone, and organs depart.

The scene was so hideous,
men's stomach emptied there.
The stench of dead and dying,
soon filled the hot days air.

The screams of pain and agony,
made quite the call of men.
That brother should slay brother,
this country’s greatest sin.

And that there my reader,
our great Civil War.
“God bless these United States”,
may she never want for more.
