AUTHOR'S NOTE: Here is a very brief explanation of the Trench Rats world.
The Trench Rats stories take place during WWII. However, it is a different WWII from the one we know. This is not merely an alternate reality from our own, but a completely different set of events. In the Trench Rat world, the Americans got involved in WWII much earlier than we did in this reality--around 1934, I believe, when the Rats were first founded. At this point in their reality, the mass killings of ethnic minorities in Nazi Germany was already taking place, and we were just learning about it. In stepped Camo and the Rats. The Trench Rat world is populated by anthropomorphic animals, and by "regular" animals. There are no humans. Anthropomorphic animals include canines, possibly felines (though none have shown up yet), and rodents. These creatures walk upright and can reason like people. Some of them wear full clothing (especially females--not to do so would constitute nudity), some don't (sometimes males--it's normal for them to be fully clothed or not). The canine "anthropomorphs" are human sized and possess human technology, though it is their own. If there are ever felines, they too will be the size of humans. The rodents are rodent sized, but aside from that, they are much the same as the canines. The "regular" animals include dogs and birds. "Regular" dogs are just like the dogs we have in our reality, of all species. It's the same with the birds--exactly like those in the human world. These animals serve the Trench Rats and other rodent groups as messengers and transportation. That is, dogs and birds are used as "cars" and "planes" by their rodent masters. There are also insects which may be used as "messenger pigeons" of a sort, but they are not widely used. There may be other "regular" animals in the Trench Rat world, such as cats, reptiles, etc., but they do not play as great a part and so are not important at this time. The canine anthropomorphs see nothing odd in there being dogs of a different sort from themselves. However...there are no "regular" rodent species in this world. That is, all rodents that come along will be of the same kind as the Trench Rats, intelligent and anthropomorphic. Technology in the Trench Rat reality is at around the same level as it was during our own WWII; however, due to Nazi experiments, people (using the term loosely) are coming into possession of great powers over which they have little control or even understanding. As such, a "raygun" of sorts appears in some of the stories, and there may even be rudimentary computer technology, greater than that which was known in our own reality at the time. There are some anachronistic experiences and happenings, but these are all in keeping with this particular reality. The characters involved usually see nothing outstandingly outlandish about any of this--it's simply the way things work in their world. END |
