"WHAT'S THIS ABOUT A BOMBING?"

I should have known that you'd be asking me all kinds of questions! But that's all right--I am, after all, your Guide. ;)

That bombing I spoke about earlier...it's a very difficult thing for many of us Rats to think about. It was incredibly tragic. Early 1941, I believe; the Nazis attacked us all out. We were never expecting anything like this. Somehow, they caught view of our Headquarters from above and dropped a bomb. It hit the North Wing of our HQ; that's why most of that section is even now still shut down. We simply never got around to repairing it.

Anyway, at the same time gas was sprayed into the trenches we have dug out in the fields not too far from HQ's location...Doomsday made quite a hero out of himself on that day, managing to locate some gas masks and drag some of the survivors out of the trenches...but the damage was done...we lost almost three-quarters of our number on that day. We were down to a "skeleton crew"...with the sergeant and corporal missing in action (we never found their bodies), Burgundy took over command until we could gather more men from the US. This duty, combined with the heavy burden of caring for many more injured people than usual, almost snapped poor Burgundy...I've never seen him so tired as when he was working then. We practically had to force him to take a rest once we were able to get things moving again.

The bombing was a horrible thing, and responsible for killing the greater number...but it's the gassing that sticks with us the most, that we find most horrible to believe. What were those guys thinking? Using gas goes against all the rules of war; I guess we should have expected it, from them.

In any case, this was the event that led to our gaining a new leader, and despite the great losses, it only strengthened our resolve and our belief in our mission. While there are still people out there who will do such horrendous things...we'll still be here too, doing everything we can to stop them.

You can count on that.
