He was just old enough to remember his father attending the funeral of the slain Amelia Grant in 1969, and to also witness his father's and Deputy Jon Grabowski's almost obsessive interest in the case. Both cops vowed to find Amelia's killers no matter how long it took. Both of them failed. On reaching adulthood Mulroy Jr. (he prefers to be called simply Mulroy) joined the ranks and worked at the county post, where he was partnered for a time with Deputy Carl Van Dusen, before transferring to the state police post and becoming a detective. He continued his own investigation into the Amelia Grant case, collecting information whenever he could, and reporting back to Grabowski (who had become sheriff) and his father. This investigation was an unofficial one, as superiors in the police department had ruled the case temporarily closed for lack of evidence--it seemed no one wanted to find the killers. In the late Seventies and early Eighties, the Scorpio Task Force was formed to investigate cult crimes which were believed to include Amelia's murder. Scorpio high priest Alec Bodine was checked out, but managed to slip through the system. Mulroy joined the task force in the Eighties and investigated alongside the other members, while keeping his own private investigation going. The 1986 murder of Lilu, sister of Damien, bore similarities to the Amelia Grant case, and had several involved parties--including new high priest Luther Broderick--as well. Again, no arrests were ever made, and the task force ended up forcefully disbanded, but Mulroy kept his eyes open. In 1990 Mulroy first met Damien and helped him out with his current problems with Scorpio. After this incident he kept a low profile for quite a while and not much is known about what he did in the ensuing years, until he showed up again in 1996, following another strange Scorpio-related murder. A splinter group of Scorpio, the Black Eagle, was forming, and this cult came under police scrutiny as well. Mulroy finally revealed to Damien the existence of the Scorpio Task Force and its involvement in the Amelia Grant and Lilu murder investigations, seriously wounding Damien's trust in him. It wasn't known until 2001 just how deeply Mulroy's personal involvement went, however, when he further revealed his own private investigation into the crimes, and his reports back to his father and Grabowski. Ever since he joined in on the cases, he had been making unofficial reports to the two retired policemen--in effect, spying on the other investigators. His reasons were simple: To hopefully solve the case his father and his boss had failed to. Yet this confession resulted in serious damage to his reputation among his fellow officers, which he has to work to repair. Mulroy still works on the new Scorpio Task Force II, and still reports to his father and Grabowski, although more openly. Mulroy Sr. is now in an important position working for the state and as such has access to material and authorities that the police themselves did not have; both Mulroys have since contributed greatly to ongoing investigations, and have just about managed to prove Amelia Grant's murderers to be members of Scorpio. They may also have been instrumental in the official reopening of the task force and in obtaining locked information related to the cases--information that they could not even look at before, due to the mysterious restrictions placed upon the investigation. Due to his excessive dedication to the case, Mulroy has next to no personal life, though he has had an on-again, off-again relationship with fellow detective Sandi Brannon (the two also worked together at the county post). He is interested in marriage, yet Brannon refuses to become too deeply involved, thus the two, both stubborn and fiery tempered, make up and break up often. He lives a typical bachelor life with his dog, and possesses a strange superstition that he is somehow impervious to bullets. So far his superstition appears to hold true: Even when directly fired at, he has not once been wounded. END |
