SUMMARY: Lynn Leja is one of the very few balanced female characters to appear in the D Is For Damien series. Born in 1965, she ran away from home at around age 15-18 to join a Bible-based cult, and remained with them until about 1983-1984. At this time she left the cult, finding it not to her liking, and took up the study of psychology. Exceedingly bright, it did not take her long to become a licensed psychologist, and she specialized in working with ex-cult members. She became known as an excellent "deprogrammer," though the more appropriate term for her practice would be exit-counselor, as she never participated in the forcible removal of any persons from a cult, but rather helped ex-cult members through their struggles.

In 1992, Dr. Leja was raped at knifepoint in the parking lot outside her place of work. She identified the attacker as a member of the cult she had belonged to, yet he was never caught. She adjusted remarkably well to life afterwards, learning how to use a gun, yet wasn't involved in any relationships for quite some time.

It is uncertain when Dr. Leja first met Damien, but it was the singer and his uncle who set up an appointment between her and Derrick Grant, who had been injured and abandoned by his own cult, Scorpio. Then in late 1993-early 1994, Damien himself ended up kidnapped and seemingly "brainwashed" by the cult. Upon his return it was found he had not been brainwashed, though he had suffered a severe trauma; even several half-willing consultations with Dr. Leja failed to result in his shedding any light on his experiences. To this day, he has claimed no memory of the event, and refuses to speak about it.

Late summer of 1998 brought about Dr. Leja's return to the tentative Scorpio investigation, which was then beginning to center on fledgling cult the Black Eagle. During these events she first met Officer Troy D'Amato, and the two later began a relationship. In 2001 when Scorpio Task Force II was established, she was invited to be a civilian member of the team, due to her experience with cults and their mindsets.

Lynn Leja is an exceptional woman in that despite her own troubles, she has managed to always keep on top of things, and to keep one step ahead of everyone else. Where others might crumble, she stands steady. Her peers and acquaintances would be hard pressed to remember a time when she has ever been angry or upset about anything; however, she is far from a weakling or a pushover, and can fight hard for what she wants or believes in. Others around her are drawn to her because of her optimism, determination, and dedication to her profession--not to mention her sometimes quirky sense of humor.
