During her time in the cult she was tortured and assaulted repeatedly, until attempting to escape with her newborn baby in 1969. She was shot and killed in the attempt, and Derrick was taken back to be raised by the cultists. As he grew older he himself was the victim of much abuse--physical, sexual, and psychological--from then-high priest Alec Bodine--who may or may not have been Derrick's father himself. Derrick grew up loyal to the cult, while at the same time detesting Bodine and his torments. When Luther Broderick shot Bodine and took over control of Scorpio in 1986, he took Derrick under his wing and made him the new second-in-command, sensing potential in the sullen young man. Derrick was a survivor. In 1989, Derrick first met Damien, who until age 6 was a member of Scorpio himself but had never had any loyalties to the cult. He attempted to dispose of Damien by sending his father, still a loyal cultist, after him, and by taking Damien's friend Elise Danbrook (also a former cultist) hostage. The two returned to Scorpio, though Elise later escaped, means unknown. In 1990, Luther temporarily lost control of the cult when presumed dead, in a car accident which left Derrick severely injured and hospitalized and unable to walk. The sworn enemy of Scorpio and thus his sworn enemy, Damien, took care of his medical expenses as he had apparently been abandoned by Luther's followers. While in recovery and what followed, Damien's uncle, Father Damien, and a cult exit-counselor, Dr. Lynn Leja, attempted to break through Derrick's reserves to point out the truth of his situation. Without Luther, Scorpio had left him behind to die. This was a fact that took a very long time to finally get through, and led to only more anger once it did. In 1992, Damien's powers were first hinted at when he touched a stumbling Derrick and with a shock accidentally healed him of his crippling injury--Derrick was able to walk again, unassisted. Though Damien himself failed to realize the truth of the incident, Derrick never forgot, and instead found himself questioning his former loyalties--how could Scorpio hold all the power, if their enemy appeared to be more powerful than they? From that day Derrick's official ties to Scorpio were severed, though he still struggles with his ingrained beliefs, and often finds himself flashing back into his cultic state of mind--"floating," as it is called. He and Damien maintained a distant acquaintance but never managed to become "friends," though in 2001 their bond grew closer. In this year Elise again contacted Damien, and Derrick was allowed in on the new Scorpio Task Force, established as a successor to the original, disbanded task force which was founded to investigate the murders of Derrick's mother and Damien's sister, among other crimes. With his extensive inside knowledge of Scorpio, Derrick is indispensable to the police now, though he still in a way feels he should remain loyal to Luther--the first person to treat him as a human being. In 2001 Derrick also began a relationship with Elise, his former hostage, though he tries hard to maintain his distance. He is often filled with disgust and self-hatred due to his own background; he does not know who his father was, nor does he wish to, if it would mean finding out his father was Alec Bodine; and he is perpetually angry that his mother was unable to protect him from his painful childhood. As such, he continues to have difficulty relating to others on any intimate level, physical or emotional, although he is desperately lonely and deeply hurt inside. END |
