MAGIC CITY
| Magic City is the twenty-fourth novel in the proposed D Is For Damien series, and takes place in September 2001, December 2001, and summer or autumn 2001. To this day it remains unwritten (a prologue is in the works), though a basic plot has been drawn up (which may be changed drastically at a future time). Like the majority of the D Is For Damien novels, I have no plans to work on it in the near future.
Basic synopsis: The most recent of the novels takes place again in Minot (a spinoff story, without Damien present--"Magic City" is the nickname of Minot). Detectives Kristeva and Devetko, along with visiting NY detective Justin Reichert, find the city in the midst of a bizarre string of suicide-murders of seemingly normal people. For some reason, people are simply killing themselves--and others--with little warning. Kristeva begins to believe the deaths may not be so random after all, especially when a deeper look at the past suicide of Sgt. Mark Kincaid (Minot) reveals his death may not have been what it seemed, after all. It's Kristeva's theory that these killings have been programmed--which means that anyone around him, himself included, may be next to pull the trigger. Like Shadows, this story is more psychological; the first novel to take place after 9/11, its events reflect this occasion as well. Interesting story tidbits: Detective Reichert first appears; more details of the death of Mark Kincaid, and of the past relationship of Kristeva and Sheriff Rhoades, are revealed; Kristeva recovers yet more memories of his own childhood; Stan Brooks takes a more important role in the story, especially following his rape, after which his personality changes drastically; the similarities between Kristeva's and Kincaid's pasts are explored; plus more I may be forgetting at the moment.
