| THE SIXTIES AND Seventies werea time of tumult and upheaval. But that was not all. It was because of this cultural revolution that many were left feeling bewildered and left behind by the tide, and as soon as they heard an offer of help they went to it like a moth to flame.
This was the reason behind the mass joinings of cults. Many of these cults were God-worshipping sects, often with rather bizarre doctrine. This doctrine was sometimes dangerous to the members and their families. It was beside impossible to join the cults to get at a friend or relative or to convince them to leave, so a plan was launched to get them out by force, and restore their minds to normal--and this processd was known as deprogramming. Cult members are usually programmed into believing their cult's doctrine. This may take a manner of weeks. The goal of the deprogrammers was to bring back their old beliefs. This could take a manner of years. Those who did escape from the cults, by force or on their own, were the lucky ones. But none of them ever fully recover. Today they still live with the memories of what they were subjected to in that other life of theirs--that life behind the heavy shielding curtains of the cults. [Note--whatever...] |
