DARK WATER, BRIGHT STARS

I saw the sky was upside-down,
Its onyx surface lit with gems;
But as I took a closer look,
The sky was fringed with grassy stems.

I saw the sea was in the sky,
Light wavelets rippling in the north;
But I looked closer still and saw
Bright stars and comets bursting forth.

Dark water mirrored in the sky,
Or dark sky mirrored in the sea;
No matter how one looks at them,
One of the other's never free.
