BASTET, CAT GODDESS OF THE NILE

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Yep, I've been interested in this subject for a long time. Hence this hokey poem dated February 13, 1991. Note that I had no sense of meter, plus, I thought that "Ra" was pronounced "Ray."

Lost to modern eyes,
Hidden far, far away,
Glowing greenish-gold eyes,
Gold earrings, necklaces, splendid array.

Bastet, cat goddess of the Nile,
Revered so long ago,
Praised and honored in her time,
Whose secrets we may never know.

Possessing treasures beyond imagining,
Daughter of the sun god Ra,
Nearly forgotten, hardly known,
But adored much to this day.

A cat is just a cat, you say?
No. I hope you can see this:
That the feline which you may hold on your lap
Is the descendant of a beautiful goddess!

Teacher's comment: "Nicely done!" Circa 1991.
