The New Umpire

updated 02/02/05

So you signed your child up to play ball... He/she is assigned to a team and you are at the parents meeting. The position of team umpire comes up and everyone just looks at the floor. All of a sudden you hear yourself or in my case spouse volunteer you. Does this sound familiar?

Now it is time to attend the clinics, but two nights seems like over kill to you.

If the only training you received was someone handing you the Official Little League Rule Book to read, you would say, "What did I get myself into and how can I get out of this".

This is why we have Umpire Clinics. At the clinics you will be taught by District Staff Umpires and league Umpire in Chiefs "UIC's" (that is your leagues head umpire). We explain the rules and situations in simpler terms. Well let’s say we try to simplify the rules.

We also have Field Clinics. They are not required be become certified but we highly recommended you attend. Knowing the correct positions and angles on the field are worth their weight in gold when you have to make a close call.

After you receive your "Certification Card" you will feel more comfortable umpiring and it may even loosen those knots in your stomach that first couple games.

Have a good season and feel free to contact your UIC or the District Staff with questions and problems. We want you to have a positive experience and want you to come back to umpire in future years.

Our home page has a link to contact information called "Contact List" on upper left hand side.
