What kind of shoes should I run in?

It comes down to what you perfer, some runners like ligher shoes, and some like heavier shoes with more support. Visit your local running store and ask an employee to help get started.

How do I get started running?

Like with any new exercise regiment, it's important to start off slow and slowly build up. Starting with short 10-15 minute runs is a great way to get your feet wet until you feel comfortable running further and faster.

The difference between miles and kilometers?

The distance running world still uses both forms of measurment and it can cause some confusion here and there. 1km is equal to about .62 of a mile. Some common race distances adjusted are 5km = 3.1 miles, 8km = 4.9 miles, 10km = 6.2 miles.

How long is a track?

Most outdoor tracks are 400 meters (.25 miles) in lane 1. That is the standard distance. Some older tracks can be longer or shorter, indoor tracks also usually only range From 200m-300m.

How does professional distance running work?

Athletes who are at the top level of the sport look to be sponsored by various clothing/running equipment companies like Adidas or Nike. Some of these brands have professional running teams set up under their banner and have athletes compete mostly as product marketing. There are some professional leauges in Europe, but most athletes focus on making it to the olympics or world championships in olympic off years. The olympics is for lack of a better term, the superbowl for all track and field athletes. Road racing is also quite popular but prize money is often pocket change to the money athletes could be making as international track stars.

Where do I watch these professional races?

Our sport is still growing to have the same coverage as other sports like basketball or football. Most races are livestreamed on the specific race's specific website. Big events like the US Championship or Olympics are usually broadcast on a national level (Usually on NBC or affiliate)
