[0.1] DISCLAIMER/LEGAL STUFF Insert something here. [0.2] "Okay, so what IS this thingy???" It's the brand-new, stunning, amazing, thrilling, mind-popping, blazing, HEX...(The HEXEN hack editor...). Currently, also the ONLY hack editor for hexen. With a wad editor, you can make new levels; But you can't make invisible monsters, make everything killable, make the monsters have, for example, the sound of the player dieing when they wander around, make Korax easier to kill, etc. With HEX you can do that, though... [0.3] Things working so far/Project status/Anything that fits in. Working right now: NOT MUCH! :) INI SUPPORT. Instead of long command-line parameters, and "file not found"'s, it's all put into ONE file, wich you can easily edit with a standard text editor. SCREEN SAVER. Mostly to impress your friends. If you have to pee, go to dinner, etc, turn off your monitor! THING NAMES. Instead of having to load up deep (or another decent wad-editor), to type in the thing #iD to fin out what it is, you can now see this on-line. It's only partial done yet, though :-) GOOD INTERFACE: Easy-to-use, nice looking, no 'hard-for-the-eyes' colors, etc. You can actually EDIT things and flags! Well, my idea is this being like DeHackEd... Try to guess where i got the idea from? Hope greg lewis won't get mad, but after-all, the HEX's interface is about the same as DeHackEd's. Hell, i'm no god or anything, what did you expect??? Take a look at the first version of DeHackEd! More stuff will be coming in, it's only a matter of time. [0.4] Planned changes. MANY! ;-) Okay...Coming up in a future release: Sorting out more of the FLAGS. Getting the thing names right (think they are, though), and, more important, making the list complete. Figuring out why raven software put in a field wich is only used once in the game, and by the afrit...It's the only thing you can't edit/view right now. There are two blank fields, however...I'm gonna find out why. Ability to load/save patches. A more intelligent THING goto routine (like DeHackEds...:-) A TOTAL reformat of everything in here, also the editor. Splelling and language correction. ;-] I still need to weed out among the smileys. It's a though job, but somebody gotta do it! [0.5] Known bugs. Ugh. Yep. They're there. Unfortunately. Some thing names COULD be incorrect, but is that a bug? (insert your favourite smiley here). If the text file with the thing names are shorter than 398 lines, some of the (later) thing names will incorrect. [1.1] How do i install it? If you have an appetite for EXE hacking, you should be able to figure out yourself... Here goes nothing: 1) Make a new directory somewhere on your hard drive. 2) Go to this subdirectory. 3) (I sure hope you have pkzip/unzip/zipfix). Type something like 'pkunzip a:\hexXXXb.zip . '. { Where XXX is current version. } 4) Edit the HEX.INI file to suit your purposes. If the HEX.INI file is missing or corrupt, see the section about the INI file. 5) Should be ready to run. You don't NEED the .pcx, although it's nice. See the appendix 'command-line options.' 6) Edit the .INI file to your needs. [1.2] How to run/syntax. The most basic way to run it is simply typing HEX from the dos command-line. You should be in the HexHack directory first, though. Here's some command-line parameters: /SKIP : If you don't feel like viewing the beautyfull intro-art! The keyboard commands are in the internal help now. [1.3] Requirements Not much. It should be able to run on a 286 or so, but since HEXEN requires more, it would be kinda idiotic to install it on a 286...;-) A VGA card wich supports 320*200 256 colors graph mode. (The same resolution as DOOM uses). Most do. The main program is only be 80*25 16 colors, though. You will need SOME memory free, but this isn't really a magic-carpet2-memory-eatup-lookalike program. [2.0] Beta testers, special people, etc. Greg Lewis (gregl@umich.edu): The creator of DeHackEd. Withouth him and dehacked, you really wouldn't have liked the interface...And there would probably never have been a function to edit the frame table! (Hey, Greg! I was only 12 bytes wrong with the frame table! Know how i did? 'Z'ap all changes in dehacked, cope hacked exe to something new, make a SINGLE change to the frame table, 'W'rite to exe, and run FC.EXE on the two EXE's...The i searched through the most of the exe looking for a structure like the one i found at the changed offset... Phew!) Thomas Gringer (dwelling@silkeborg.bib.dk): One of my...friends. My first beta-tester, and also kinda 'demi-author'. Without his support and criticism, I prolly wouldn't have done the thing names. He's the first person besides me to try this out. Also my moral supporter and about the only guy who have heard me babbling about how cool i am ;-] Henrik Rosenoe(hero@login.dknet.dk): He promised me that if I couldn't get this on the net by myself, (The librarians removed the 'upload' function from netscape), he would do it. Andy Shawaluk(andy_shawaluk@diageng.mei.com) My first 'out-of-house' beta tester. -Also the only one who have mailed me about HEX :-) Cut down the unknowns from 10% to 4%! (Or was it 40 to 10? :-) [3.0] Programs used. For the main coding part, i used Borland Pascal v7.0. No, i DON'T code in c...I will learn it someday, though. I hope. I code a little ASM, but the ASM i have coded for HEX myself is pretty limited, though. I used TheDraw to reproduce the DeHackEd screen. Deluxe Paint (II?) for modifying the title picture slightly. Figlet to make my name as a logo. I used DEEP (Doom Enhanced Editor Program) for figuring out MANY of the things. The Hexen Tech Specs where pretty unclear about the things, and full of bugs. But it seems the authors of DEEP have gotten most of it right. SWAG. Of course. NO pascal programmer should be without it! [3.1] Trademarks and stuff. HEXEN, Hexen and hexen (basically, any case) is a trademark of RAVEN software (also, any case), and as far as I know, also iD software. DeHackEd is a trademark or so of Greg Lewis. TheDraw is copyrighted by TheSoft programming services and Ian Davis. Deluxe Paint is copyrighted by Electronic Arts. I seem to have deleted the FIGLET.DOC file... DEEP is copyright of : Cyrus Amiri, Jack & Mike Vermeulen from SBS (Sensor Based Systems). It's simply the greatest editor, since waded lacks a LOT of functions...*sob* :-) [4.0] HOW TO CONTACT THE AUTHOR: 1) My email address is up and going! It's 'SuneMan@silkeborg.bib.dk'. That is the only way you have to contact me, as i don't like letter/phone 'bomb' threaths. [4.1] Misc. author info. I'm 14...More will get in if ppl want it. [4.2] What to tell me/What NOT to tell me Well, i really can't use letters just telling me that i'm an idiot or 'the input thing number thingy doesn't work, you idiot' (More acceptable, though). I CAN, however, use things more like 'If i try to use the input thing number thingy, the program crashes with a "Run-time error XXXX at 111a:a111, you idiot!', or 'The Screen-saver works okay, but it really doesn't save the screen'. I would also like what you think i should implement, remove, correct, etc. Everything that has meaning (and even things that don't) would be appreciated. I would like to hear your opinion, so i WILL accept things like 'It really SUCKS!'. I will, however, not take stuff like that too serious, and it wont help me much. You would be VERY welcome to tell me it rules, but you won't get a free copy for that reason ;). I'm also thinking about you not HAVING to register. Just cardware or something. (But donations of any amount would be well appreciated!). I would of course appreciate any contributions to this, pictures, text files, .wads, references, offers to do a homepage for me, small (or large) snippets of source code (ANY language...I can UNDERSTAND many, and with some hard work, i think i would be able to use half of that 'many'... If you can, keep it in Pascal/Pseudo. If you have some fast ASM code, DONT change to pascal, even if you're able to...If you have ACTUALLY WORKING code, just post in ANY language. I would especially appreciate some ASM code (inline pascal, if you have it), to save 320*200 256 color pcx files. I have an PASCAL version, but it is slow like .... I would also like simply ANYTHING. Just keep it to 250kb or so, unless you REALLY have to! If it's that big, ask me if i can use it before you mail it to me. [4.3] Things that i would like you to know.
