Brides should get huge money, gold and jewellery to the in - laws family. If the girl fails to fulfill the promises, in-laws family put her under heavy torture and some times, they even kill the new bride.
Your series sounds very interesting! I know about this horrible dowry-thingy from my days living in Singapore and Malaysia. I have listened to the rich girls boasting/talking about their dowry and watched the poorer ones grow quiet and withdraw gradually from our group. I hated that!
