Random thoughts from 20th Century Fox Mexico Theatrical's Marketing Director.
Entry for August 31, 2007

So, the other day I was telling you about what are the things that turn a movie into MY kind of movie. First off I mentioned those nihilistic, ironic endings; second-up were cool, easy going leading characters (or very intense characters that have nihilistic, ironic endings). Another hugely important factor for a great film, to me, is the music. What would Indiana Jones be without his march? Or Star Wars? Or Jaws? Think about a couple of films that have made you feel really excited-  they probably had very cool music on them. One of my all time favorites is Beetlejuice, and I remember getting hooked by that opening traveling shot of the town / maquette to the music of Danny Elfman. Another favorite of mine was “The Sting” with Scott Joplin’s ragtime tunes, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”, with Enio Morricone’s excellent score, or "Tron", a not-so-great movie but with incredible, break through scoring by Wendy Carlos (the same dude/dudette from Clockwork Orange)… The list of good scoring could go on and on. But let me give you an example of the exact opposite: “Never Say Never Again”, with my super favorite star, Sean Connery, would have been so much better if they had just spent more in a better composer. As it is, the action scenes don’t work well with the below-par, totally forgettable music (I still like the title song because it reminds me of the film, not because it’s particularly good). You sometimes may not notice, but good music is key to rounding a really satisfying movie going experience.
