When Joseph first came to me, he was less focused. His mind trip was considered flight of fancy at most though many ideas expressed by him were rather incredible.

Below is the transcript during interview secession:

Joseph, why have you chosen McEdford as the character in your story?

Mr Grey, you have to read the whole story to understand that.

I did, believe me, however illogical McEd may be, and his role as the mastermind in this plot to create an outbreak of a pandemic seemed far fetch.

Mr Grey, do you believe human beings possess extraordinary ability when his mind is dead set to achieve his objective?

Yes, I do and in fact history has shown numerous cases that ordinary people rise to the occasion to achieve great result in extreme circumstances, but the end results are always noble.

What constitutes a noble cause, Mr Grey?

Well, anything for the greater good of humanity, that I consider noble cause.

So are McEdford and his cause, Mr Grey, so is our high and mighty McEdford.

That was when the interview was cut short and I couldn’t help but spent the rest of the day to read and reread the short story written by Joseph. What intrigued me most was how Joseph could create such a character as McEd, obviously one of his alter egos. The most troubled question is just how many alter egos have in Joseph?

In chapter 3, McEd has already transformed from an angry young underachiever to a vengeful microbiologist. He spent longer and longer hours in the lab, a level 4, and his professor seemed to notice his changed personality.

Chapter 6, Inspector Johnstan paid a visit to professor Ulrich, in the course of conversation; Insp. Johnstan revealed that McEdford could be implicated with the recent Elnova outbreak in Wrlodnuo town. Professor Ulrich, however, was not convinced as McEd was simply not competent enough to pull off such incident in such scale. “He’s simply not up to mark for that.”

“Why is that?” asked Insp. Johnstan

“He’s a D-grader”, quipped the professor

“Excuse me?” enquired Insp. Johnstan

“I gave him a D”, said the professor, and if you’d excuse me, I have a lecture to conduct.

Joseph, Joseph, what was in your mind? How do you pen a D-grader to carry out such an act?

Out of frustration, I logged off my notebook and began browsing through “The Checkered Mind”, another book written by Joseph.

As I was flipping through the pages, my eye suddenly caught hold of an unusual name, MaCEd.

Instinctively, I flipped to Chapter 22 of Joseph’s short story again and my mind was struck with stupor as the lines appeared before me…..”Professor Ulrich logged into his research website, x.change, a bio-medical network for researchers to exchange ideas and information sharing. As usual, he entered his request and hit enter, sipping his coffee as he waits for the reply…

MaCEd: professor, the recombinant RNA that you requested could not exist unless it’s first undergone precision splicing after which, a mutated mRNA is then paired to one of the base.

Ulrich: so whoever did this must be highly skilled in this?

MaCEd: we’re talking about expert whose skill is way above you and the people here combined.

I pick up the phone immediately and call Edward, my buddy whom I like to call Mr number.

Hey, number guy, it’s me, Grey.

Yeah, I know it’s you, what’s up?

Do a quick check for me, what is the probability for the name McEdford to be linked to MaCEd?

Oh brother, you never fail to surprise me, ha ha ha…

My effort will amaze you, Grey

Come on, Eddy boy, no time to joke

I told you already, my effort amaze you.

Excuse me, please elaborate, will you?

My dear Grey, read carefully, McEdford=my effort and MaCEd=amaze, got it? Yes, it’s the one and same person, happy? Come on, you don’t need a rocket scientist to figure that out, do you?

No, just to confirm my hunch, thanks and let’s meet for tea someday, bye.
