CENSORSHIP
2002-06-14 It’s very disturbing that in the 21st century
in a democratic society we still need or should I say we still have censorship.
What is it that some people like to dictate what we should read, watch or
listen? Why some people and the
Government don’t understand that every person has full knowledge of
own conscious and responsibility of own action and they are aware of
it. Now we acknowledged that Queensland Education has been recommended
for senior students book “Hooky the Cripple” written by
Mark Read, petty convicted killer. People are very concerned,
particularly parents of the students who can be exposed to that book and they
start lobbying for exclusion that book from school. Their anger is
understandable but should be addressed differently. Pushing for ban
simply it’s one more example of censorship, which won’t solve this
problem. People concerned about it should look for answers in an
Education Department, because they gave permission for filling school
libraries bookshelves with that book and that should never happened in the
first place. What kind of people are working for education who from
thousands of book published every year, have decided that peculiar
book is so good and innovative, that they recommended it for school
students? All parents should focus their disapproval on Education Minister and
ask her what kind of education, training and experience her
staff has for suggesting such crap like that book. Basically we don’t
need to be highly educated for introducing to young people any kind
of awful, rotten and appalling rubbish like writing from Mark
Read. Perhaps in that case we would like to talk about restriction
against that book. But maybe we have to start making restriction for
irresponsible people working in the Education Department with as such poor
attitude. Everyone knows well that is a disgraceful situation and
that has nothing to do with freedom of speech or censorship. This
is a matter of honesty, responsibility, integrity, liability,
accountability and duty of our education system in relation to the
children. That’s why parents of school children hope that Minister for
Education understand that and in the future she won’t make the same mistake
again. Back to home page |
