EAST TIMOR2002-06-07 It is fantastic news that eventually we have in our
region newborn nation - East Timor. Congratulations to the East Timor’
people. After 25 years of fighting for independence at last they
have got their rights to exist as a free nation and country. Australian
Government took a very important part in this process. We are so
proud now that we could help them achieve freedom and autonomy. Why
didn’t our Government help them sooner? Why are we not helping and
supporting other ethnic groups, which fight for their freedom
longer, then East Timor? Do the Government help any human being, because they
care or have passion for value of people rights to decide about their
life and future? I don’t think so. Human rights and politics are not the
same pair of shoes. They link to each other but that link is very fragile
and for sure they stick to each other. Politics is a very dirty job for
manipulating people and nations. That’s why the Governments around the world including
Australia play human rights cards for their own purposes and
businesses. Any involvement or determination by the Government in fighting with unjust,
right to freedom and being a nation for other ethnic groups is a camouflage
of ignorance and luck of understanding. Particularly now, some
Governments using fight with terrorism for destroying some ethnic group
rights to exist, e.g. Tibetans, Palestinians, Kurds, Basks, Tamils,
Albanians and this list has no end. Let’s look what happened after communist countries went
apart. How many nations have originated after that? Why they
were so lucky? Did they deserve more than other groups for getting
rights to have own country? Have they been fighting for their freedom for
so long as others? Some yes, some not. But most Governments, which were
opposing communism the best thing to do was divide them to
smaller countries for better controlling and over power them. That was
nothing to do with freedom. That was strictly political reason for reduce
and diminish power of Russia. They achieved that but on other hand almost
none of these new post communist countries are democratic and citizens can
only dream about human rights. Do we have any good peaceful and
democratic solution for resolving people’s rights to
self-determination about their future? In that moment nobody came up with any good
answer, particularly United Nations as an organization, which
should fight against prejudice and intolerance among or within the
countries. UN efforts ending on peacekeeping missions mostly, which
often solve the problem for only a short time. But we need a
long-term solution for stoping atrocities, discrimination and terror
in all sides of conflicts. The Australian Government like others countries is not doing enough in that matter and I don’t see any prospect for change in this subject. That’s happened mainly because human rights and right’s ethnic groups to autonomy are on the end of the long list of priorities of the all Governments polices. From citizens point of view we can be only happy for a
new country like East Timor. We are hoping that they have learnt
something from their terrible and tragic past for independence, and that they
use their freedom wisely and democratic values for protecting human rights
of all their citizens, without any discrimination. Good on you East Timor. Back to home page |
