4 YEARS TERM2002-05-27 Australian politicians came up with a new idea of extending sitting in the Federal Parliament to four years and Senate to eight years. What a fantastic thought but why? They are talking about saving monies, since currently we have too many elections in any short period of time. Members of both sides of politics agree on that issue. But why did politicians concentrate their efforts only on that one particular subject? Why don’t they want to improve all of our system of Government? Why don’t they like talking about how much money we could save on changes to overloaded Australian parliamentary system? We have Federal, State and Local Governments. They are duplicating power and responsibilities, blaming each other for mistakes and lack of policies. How much are we spending on parliamentary wages, superannuation, privileges, travelling and other allowances? How much we could save on these specific matters? Politicians like making tough decisions but only against ordinary citizens. They never volunteer to decrease their position and privileges. Everything changes around us like the environment, economy, and social life but in political sense nothing. Politicians like explaining that we need to make adjustments in the existing, because we are living in advanced and rapidly speed, so called techno-social environment. But political status is untouchable. Our political structures were established more then a century ago and they are not suitable any more to the 21st century. In that sense we not moving forward, we are simply going
backward. All major parties don’t like to change this situation
because that gives them influence, money and power. That’s why we
have to push politicians to make changes, that give us more
efficient, accountable, honest and better Members of Parliament or the
Governing System. We need people in power who clearly understand,
that our establishment has to create responsibilities for all
Governments and set up proper legislation indicating who and where
should have legislative and control. In the current situation
all of the power is out of reach of the citizens’ rights. That is the biggest weakness of our political system. Politicians should start thinking about this very
seriously if they want our approval to increase their power and elevated position in this country. And we are not talking here only about
honesty, credibility but most of all about attitude to listen our voice. The voice of the community, the voice of ordinary
citizens who have chosen their Members of Parliament for represent them
and listen to them, not to ignore them. Back to home page |
