Euthanasia2002-04-06 Nancy Crick, a terminally ill grandmother, opened again the
debate on the right to die. Why do people like Nancy have to
make the first step to make political point about euthanasia? It’s a disgrace
that politicians are not doing anything to protect the people’s rights.
In a democratic society the Government’s job is to make sure that the
law protects people’s rights. We know very well how delicate the
issue of euthanasia it is and because of that we have no right, particularly
politicians, to put our heads in the sand, thinking that the problem will go
away. We have a lot of very ill people who can’t stand the
pain and humiliation of their circumstance any longer, especially when
medicine doesn’t offer any hope. Any hope for recovery or normal decent life,
which is not dependant on others. That’s why I am saying that the
Government has to do something, because doing nothing doesn’t solve the
problem of sick people with chronic pain committing suicide. The most
important moral issue about our rights to live and die give us
opportunity to think about it, how we can help people who are very sick and their
normal life no longer exists. It’s not right that the police threaten to silence
the debate about euthanasia. Once again politicians are showing
intolerance towards political debates, they don’t like. They should resolve that issue with democratic means, and not by spying on political rally
which didn’t present there any threat to community. That incident shows
how the police are involved in protecting political parties in power. It’s raises doubts about our democracy by showing that
anybody who has different political opinion will be under
surveillance by opponents and parties, which are in a government. It
doesn’t do any good when the Government behaves with undemocratic
menace. Nobody can escape the issue of euthanasia. It catches up
with you sooner or latter. That’s why politicians should stop
harassing people who have got different view about it. Euthanasia
concern very small proportion of the population and law should
protect them from the abuse. We have to understand that right to commit
suicide should be our choice if we don’t have any other option. Nancy Crick is a very brave woman, who doesn’t want end
her life. She just wants to have the right to die with dignity
when all help from medicine is gone. It is sad that Government doesn’t
understand that and doesn’t want help her, but instead makes threats against
her. She already suffered too much and her life is filled with
terrible pain. It doesn’t matter whether we agree with her or not. She,
and people in her position deserves a little support, understanding,
help and sympathy. Back to Home Page |
