AUSTRALIA DAY2002-01-16 On 26 of January again we will be celebrating Australia
Day. More and more citizens understand the importance and
privilege to be a part of Australia. But for some that day is a reminder of
invasion white people against indigenous population and taking everything from
them, not only the land but freedom, their culture, their political and
social live. For them that is “Sorry Day” and any apology won’t
change that, but changing that date would be a good direction towards
reconciliation. What can we do for better understanding that all
Australians should be a part of happiness and joy being Australian citizen? Australia Day should be a day where everyone doesn’t
matter of sex and background will be identifying with Australia. For getting to that point we need to know more about
Australian history. That’s meaning that we should learn about us good and
bad things. We have to stop hiding facts, which happened in the
past. That offcourse is a big task for government and politicians. We have to
remember that we can’t trust them because they are using everything for
political purpose. Coalition Government is not the best with dealing with people.
That’s why I don’t see any chance for change during Mr Howard’s Government or
any step towards reconciliation. One of the biggest mistakes of Mr Howard
is that he doesn’t recognize that reconciliation is not only for Aboriginal
people. That matter is important for all Australian. I would like to see that Australia Day as the first step
to bringing all citizens together to reunite all country. But I’m not so sure
that Monarchy system can help with that. I think that when we will get to
Republic maybe after that Australia Day will link our future and past together for
better understanding our history and culture. If we want that, we have to look to
the bottom of our hearts and our passion, after that we can look to the brighter
future, where all of us will belong to one nation without dividing past and
prejudice. Now on 26 January 2002 we should enjoy and contemplate
about us, our future, justice, equal opportunities and I hope that in the near
future understanding and forgiveness wins on both sides of dividing sides.
After that we will be proud to say that Australia Day is the most significant and
important event for all of us, because we all will be part of that. Part of one
community-community of Australia. Back to home page |
