PARLIAMENTARY
ENTITLEMENTS
2001-12-06 What an ironic situation we have got again? Election is
over and members of parliament without asking us what we think of
their entitlements they want more money. Not only for
themselves but also for their families like spouses and kids. They are
saying that we have no rights to decide about their salaries and
travelling expenses. But who is paying them? Who is the employer? We are. All
citizens. It’s time for Prime Minister John Howard and all
parliamentarians do something about it. It’s time for John Howard stop
pretending that nothing happened. It’s too long for him to keep his
head under the sand like emus. Silence of Mr Howard doesn’t resolve
that problem. Government has to talk about this matter with the
Community. He is very wrong if he thinks that problem will go away. All
politicians have to understand that is a matter of principle,
honesty and moral obligation for citizens. Ordinary Australians have to
struggle to earn little penny and they can’t get any entitlements from
employer for their children and spouses. A minimum of what politicians can
do about their entitlements is to explain to people why we have
to give them more money and why? Last enquiry about abused parliamentary
entitlements has put forward more than 20 recommendations, which
government should implement for protection from abuse and fraud by
politicians. Government didn’t do anything about it with applause
from opposition. That’s showing us what kind of politicians we have got.
Why we have to do something about it. We should ask Prime Minister (and
very strongly push him) for independent body which would be
controlling all members of parliament wages and travelling expenses. Of course
that independent body should be representing all citizens and that people
shouldn’t be involving with any political party. But as usual who
wants to give a power to the people? Politicians. I don’t think so. They want
to grab everything what they can and that is not acceptable. We simply see
again and again that politicians after election are forgetting about
their duties to communicate with their constituency. Their motto of
political life is: kiss my … and see you in the next 3 years during
election. I hope this time people show their disapproval loudly and enough
strongly that politicians, particularly Government quickly change
their attitude about parliamentary entitlements, because such behaviour
will not be tolerating in our democratic society. Back to home page |
