My 1977 Jim Redcay as equipped in 2004
Jim Redcay built custom steel bicycle frames in his Lambertville, NJ shop from the early 1970's until the early 80's, when he went to work for Ross, building their "Signature" line of custom bikes. He later worked as technical editor of Bicycling magazine, and eventually left the bicycle business to pursue other interests. Tom Kellogg calls Redcay "one of the early greats of modern American frame building" who "developed a unique style of building opting for clean, modern and simple pieces." Lugless fillet brazed frame construction was not a particular specialty of Redcay's but it was a logical extension of his "clean and simple" design philosophy, and he agreed to my request to build my bike this way. This particular style of "fastback" seat cluster is a Redcay trademark. See the Classic Rendezvous link below for another example. |
The frame was repaired and repainted in 1985, by
Peter Weigle, who put on this new style Redcay head tube
decal. The original style was just the plain red letter
K, more in keeping with the "clean and simple"
tradition, and can be seen on the CR website below. The right chainstay repair can be seen in the picture at the top of my Sturmey Archer AM page. It was decided to repair rather than replace the chainstay. |
Another example of Redcay's work can be found in the Cirque du Cyclisme 2001 section of the Classic Rendezvous website, specifically here (scroll down past the Colnago).
