When his mother mary was engaged to joseph,before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy sprit .But as joseph,her fiance was fair-minded and did not want to disgrace her publicly,he planned to break with her secretly.But while he was,considering this,an angel of the lord appeared to him in a dream and said,"Joseph,son of David,be not afraid to take mary as your wife.for what is conceived in her is from the Holy sprit.she will give birth to a son and you are to call him jesus,for he will save his people from their sins".

All this took place in fulfillment of what the lord had said through the prophet."Behold!The virgin will be with child and shall bear a son,and they will name him Immanuel",which means God with us.

When Joseph awoke from his sleep he carried out what the angel command of the lord.He took to him his wife,but had no marital relations with her until she had given birth to her first born son,whom he called,Jesus.
