Richard Townsend of Cape May Co., NJ




Richard TOWNSEND was the son of John TOWNSEND and Phebe WILLIAMS of Long Island, NY. He was reported to be the first white child born in the Upper Precinct, Cape May Co., NJ. (John TOWNSEND was the son of Richard TOWNSEND and Elizabeth WEEKS (or WICKES) of Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY. John's father, Richard TOWNSEND, was one of the three original TOWNSEND brothers who probably came from England and settled at Oyster Bay.)

    Richard TOWNSEND's earmark was registered in 1694/5. He was a Commissioner of the Peace, appointed September 30th, 1753. At the Cape May and Egg Harbor Friends' Meeting, the 7th day of the 9th month, 1726, he was chosen clerk of the monthly meeting, and also an overseer.
