CYGNET NIGHT LIFE
Smells of spaghetti rice and fish were filling the common room adjoined to the kitchen. I really should have been getting to my own dinner. I just couldnt have been bothered. Yoshi and Yukari were cooking some sort of croquette thing. The English couple were watching TV in the other room. Tom was staying in the other building , I had just about given up trying to talk to Naoko. She was sitting talking to Yoshie as Emiko was flirting with the Swedish guy Johan by stealing his hat and running around with it. She had found a marker and was in the process of writing her name in it. It had been a long day and I was feeling pretty lousy. I walked out to the veranda to get some fresh air.
Ben!
Jutta!
I nodded my head to Manish and Rhino who were also out on veranda. After observing the situation , I responded to the situation with the following Ill be right back. Im going to go get my box of wine
Backpackers thrive on cask wine. It is the cheapest vilest stuff on the planet. Itll get you drunk, make you throw up and leave you with the worst hangovers known to man. It is, however, right inside of the backpacker budget at about two dollars a liter. Jutta was drinking a number of things and had a big head start on me for the evening. We were having the usual bitch session with the only difference that I was drinking a bit more than usual. Jutta started
Im twenty-nine, I have a really nice flat in Munich. What the fuck am I doing in Cygnet picking apples. Where are all the nice older men here? Im not talking about all these twenty-one twenty-two backpackers. I want to get back to my music collection and my books I responded in turn.
I miss my computer, I havent seen it in four months. Im sick of going to all these online centers that are still running a network on dial-up. I want to get back to using broadband and to be on the internet 24/7! I miss cable, my DVDs., downloading anime and a stable income! There was the usual toast after this Cygnet sucks
Cygnet Sucks
I was refilling my glass with wine. I couldnt remember what number I was on. It didnt really matter anyway. Something in the back of my head was reminding me that I really should have had dinner before to drinking so much. I ignored it. It wasnt that important at the moment. I think we were ranting on how Australians were destroying the English language at that point. I refilled my glass again and wandered back in the common room with the intention of finding something to eat or snack on. Yohan spotted me on the way back in. Emiko was sitting on his lap. Ben youre drinking! Whats the occasion? he inquired
It felt like a good night for it I responded and then switched into Japanese and turned to Emiko and the stars are up outside, its very pretty outside you should see it She shook her head as I finished my glass.
When I made my way back to veranda I had two glasses in my hand. Instead of food I had managed to make myself a cup of tea. The other was another glass of wine. I finished that. And things started to become hazy. I remember throwing up in the toilet, getting a glass a water and sitting down on the couch thinking I needed to sober up a little before trying to go to sleep. The next thing I remember is the sound of Yoshie washing dishes in the kitchen. I was still on the couch Yoshie was always the first one up. She cleaned the place for a discount on accommodation. It meant that it was almost time for work. I must have just passed out on the couch last night I thought. It was odd that I had a blanket. I sprang up, put the blanket aside to discover that I was in my underwear.
Thats odd I thought. I looked next to me and there was a hot water bottle Thats strange I thought. I looked around and realized that my pants werent anywhere near me. Somehow they had made it back to my room while my own person hadnt. I walked by Jutta. She gave me a very strange look. An English girl stopped me in the hallway and said
Your still going to work after last night?
Of course, I just had a little to drink and passed out on the couch
really?
I was heading to the bus and stopped Jutta to see if she had some answers to my questions. I drank soo much last night she told me. I drank beer wine and rum some whiskey Ive got a big hangover. Im surprised your going to work This was news to me, I could remember beer and wine, but the last two were news to me. I was feeling a little off balance but overall fine.
Do you know why I woke up without my pants? Did I say anything I shouldnt have?
No I dont, you were fucking drunk last night but you werent too bad , fucking impolite but there are much worse here The amount of gap in my memory became more apparent later. I sat next to a pleasant girl from Korea on the bus named Nami. Nami didnt drink or smoke and had become a born again Christian in Australia. She was one of those people who was always smiling, enjoyed singing and was overall nice to be around. She turned to me and said in her strong accent
They told me about last night, they said you were really drunk and saying I am an Amerricann Amerrican I didnt really get any more info on what went on. What I hadnt noticed that night was that Rhino hadnt been drinking. He filled me in when I saw him after work.
Hey matey, howd ya go at work today
Alright.. do you know what happened last night? Im still trying to figure out how I woke up without my pants.
Matey, you gave your pants to Manish when you crashed on the couch He laughed as he spoke. I was still confused.
Could you tell me exactly well what happened last night?
You shoulda asked Jutta, you and her were the best of mates last night. When I cam in you had a glass of water and were munching on some bread. You disappeared for a few hours and Manish found you passed out on the bathroom floor with puke on the floor next to you.
No, I remember going and throwing up in the bathroom, I made it back fine I protested. Rhino responded with a big grin
You went back matey, After that you took a little nap on that couch, moved on and cuddled up with Jutta for a while, Went back to that couch and slept talked some more, you were stumbling about and couldnt really see well because you didnt have your glasses on
Was I loud?
Not by American standards but you had a good winge last night. You kept on saying we didnt understand you because you were an American On the word American Rhino faded into a drawn out whine. I assumed this some imitation of my style of speech the night before.
So, why did I did I give my pants to Manish last night? I asked as a final question.
He was taking care of you last night matey. He found your wallet in the bathroom, gave you a blanket. He and Jutta tried to get you to sleep in your room but I dont think you would go.
That explained a lot. The memory loss really bothered me. Having the gap there really bothered me. I lost my taste for cask wine. This wasnt a problem as I had drunk my entire supply the night before.
