Twin Trouble
By Cynthia May
Author's Note: This story is an extension of a caption I wrote (#255) and the idea just wouldn't go away. So I have written up the opening stanza.
Robert stared into space blankly. His life had been turned upside down since his twin sister’s death. His mother was devastated and was becoming a recluse. At eighteen Robert had also suffered and found that most of the time all he was good for was sitting around the house, he couldn’t bring himself to go for any jobs and he had even failed to finish high school. One day a flyer came in the mail for a discount glamour photography and make over session for any teenage girl in the house. His mum stuck the flyer to the fridge and stared for hours at it. Then she said to Robert "You know I never had a decent photo of your sister and I have been thinking. Would you dress in your sisters things and get this picture done... for me?" Robert looked at his mother’s eyes and knew he could not say no, even though the idea sounded stupid. A phone call for an appointment for Miss Penny Watson at the studio was made.
They were almost identical twins save for their gender. So it was that Robert aided by his mother put on one of his sisters black skirts and hose and heels. He then awkwardly strapped himself into one her bras and his mum used some old shoulder pads to fill it.
Mrs. Watson had not been able to part with her daughter’s things; in fact her room remained, as it was when she passed away, except it was tidy. So it was no surprise that there were plenty of Penny’s things like clothes, shoes, underwear, make-up, brushes and the like at her disposal. An agonizing hour later Robert now looking for all intents and purposes like his sister, furtively left the house with his mother and caught the bus to the mall on a sunny Thursday. Mrs. Roberts had had to sell their car to pay some of the bills. Robert just prayed as he waited at the stop that nobody he knew would spot him.
Off they went to the mall where the studio was. Robert just kept his head down and tried to not look conspicuous as he and his mother looked for the studio. They arrived and were greeted by a lovely woman who took all the details and told Robert to take a seat at the mirror. After being made up by the make-up woman Robert was asked if she wanted to wear any special outfit, that they had on site. He was about to whisper his best girlie no when his mum piped up.
"Just nothing that shows too much cleavage, Penny hasn’t really developed any yet."
"No problem Mrs. Watson we can work with that," the woman named Celia replied.
"Mum" snapped Robert also in his best Penny voice.
"It’s ok Penny," said Celia. "Gary our photographer is very good with young women and he will make you look sensational."
The glass of champagne they handed out while preparing helped Robert, who hadn't really touched a drink before, to relax. Robert who was now growing accustomed to being called Penny by the staff and was taken through an hour of the photographer getting him to do different girlie poses. About half way through Celia brought a different outfit in, along with a second glass of champagne. This dress was more like something a model might wear. Celia offered it to Robert who squirmed at the skimpiness of it. Gary came over and reassured Robert by saying "why don’t you take out that padding Penny and remove that bra, I guarantee you I’ll take some shots that will make you look great!" Some of the following shots were a bit provocative and Gary told Penny she had a great face for the camera. The fact Robert was now a little tipsy probably helped.
Finally it was over and Robert got changed back into his Penny outfit. His mum paid for the session and was told the proofs would be ready in about three or four days and that they’d call her. Robert was well pleased with his efforts and the false confidence the couple of drinks gave him allowed him a little bit of cheek. He thanked Gary and Celia a little too graciously and promised to come in and pick up the shots personally. His mum almost kicked him.
Rob and his mum were now walking out through the crowded mall. This time Rob was walking with his head up. He was playing the part fully, accentuating his walk in his heels and smiling like most happy drunks do. He had his hair and make-up professionally done by Celia so he looked even better than when he arrived at the mall. His mum just wanted to get him out of there and tried to hurry him but Rob was reveling in the attention he was getting, more than one young boy ogled the pretty girl they saw. If only they knew, Rob laughed inwardly.
They were almost out of the mall when someone called his mother’s name. Virginia Watson stopped and spun around to her left. The voice belonged to her old boss Roman Willing. Virginia used to be his bookkeeper before her marriage broke up. It was five or maybe six years since she had worked for or even seen Roman. They were old friends as well. When she worked for Roman, Virginia had loved her job and back deep in the recess of sub conscious had a little ‘thing’ for him. Which she had never acted on, even after her divorce? Her last job had not been anywhere near as enjoyable and she often wondered how Roman and the business were going.
Greetings were exchanged between the two old friends but Robert had lost his air of confidence at this turn of events. He vaguely remembered Mr. Willing from a couple of work functions that company families had attended. He didn’t know much about him though or if in fact he knew that he could not possibly be Penny. Robert decided to say nothing. Then it happened.
"My my Virginia your daughter, Penny isn’t it, has certainly blossomed into a beautiful young woman" said Roman.
Robert was a little relieved he hadn’t been made and Mr. Willing obviously was not aware that Penny had passed away. Now all he needed was his mum to play the part and not give the game away, the embarrassment level would be too much. Rob’s mum looked at him for a second and made eye contact, Rob did his best to mentally convey his feelings to her.
"Yes she has Mr. Willing," Virginia responded, much to Rob’s relief.
"Please Virginia it’s always been Roman."
"Of course Roman, yes I am very proud of my little girl," Virginia Watson spouted.
"Say Virginia, will you and your daughter like to have a bite to eat with me?"
"I don’t know Roman we have to get home."
"Too what? Come on, you can tell me what’s been happening in your life."
"We really must be going," Mrs. Watson responded.
"Please, I am just killing time until I meet a client."
The next two events that shaped the future were both of Rob’s doing. All this back and forth banter had easily irritated the cross dressed boy and he could see how much his mum would like to have some adult company. She had barely done more than grocery shop since Penny died and here was an opportunity to actually interact with an adult. Rob knew his mum needed this.
"Oh come on mum, lets stay," Robert said.
Mrs. Watson looked at Robert a little stunned but he seemed insistent if his eyes were telling the story. Truth is the alcohol-induced cockiness was returning to the surface after a couple of nervous minutes and Robert was smiling again. Virginia knew she could nix this event right now but thought that if Rob wanted to risk it then she would too.
"Ok Ok Penny we will stay, if you don’t mind two extra mouths to feed Roman?"
"It would be my absolute pleasure Virginia," Roman replied.
"I’m only eating at the little bistro at the end of the mall if that’s acceptable?" Roman said.
"Anywhere is fine thanks Roman," Mrs. Watson replied.
Robert felt proud of his achievement. He was a little too drunk to contemplate his position, besides he might as well have someone buy him, or her, a meal he figured. It’s the least they could do considering the effort he had gone to for his mother's sake. Shortly they were all seated at the little eatery, which was very popular and even a little pricey. Lots of business types seemed to be doing business over a coffee and a light meal and a few shop assistants were in presumably having an afternoon break as it was around three o’clock. The trio chatted for a while as they waited to be served. Well Robert didn’t chat much he was trying to say as little as possible but what he did say certainly didn’t give him away. Rob had always been able to 'do' Penny's voice and vice versa and Roman Willing was definitely none the wiser. A waitress asked if they would like to order drinks and Roman ordered a gin and tonic. Virginia decided to have mineral water and when they came to Robert he figured he’d play a full hand and asked if he might order a wine. A kick under the table from his mum went unnoticed by Roman who was telling the waitress to get the young woman a white wine. Virginia was beginning to protest when Roman shushed her.
"Virginia; Penny is what nineteen?"
"She’s eighteen Roman."
"None the less if she wants a wine why not let her," Roman asked rhetorically.
Roman aided this statement with a reassuring hand on Virginia’s hand. A gesture that did not go unnoticed by Mrs. Virginia Watson.
"Ok well just one then," she relented.
Robert beamed in triumph, Roman smiled and Virginia almost giggled at the absurd situation. A situation neither Robert nor her would have foretold this morning when they set out. Meals were ordered and light chatter continued as they ate. Roman then made his pitch, which had been formulating in his head since he ran into Virginia Watson
"Say Virginia would you consider coming back to work for us at the plant?"
Rob's mum had always wanted to go back there to work and now there were the only partly paid funeral expenses, which had left them very broke. Someone in the household had to get more than welfare benefits soon or they may both be out on the street. Virginia hadn’t pushed Robert to find work as she knew he was having trouble dealing with his sister’s loss.
"If you want me," she said "I haven't worked much lately since..." her voice trailed off as she realised where she had taken the conversation and the all too painful reminder of why she wasn't working.
"Since what?" Roman asked not knowing anything.
Now Virginia was in a pickle; a quick glance to Rob was greeted with a non-plussed look, which didn't help. The pause was becoming noticeable and she should answer. She began to fidget nervously and was losing it. Virginia Watson was about to come clean with Roman when Rob spoke for her.
"My brother Rob died Mr. Willing"
"Oh my, I'm so sorry Virginia I had no idea" Roman profusely appologised and handed his handkerchief to now sobbing Virginia Watson.
Virginia was distraught, and not for the first time since Penny's death. This was the first time in the company of someone other than close family though. Rob had uttered the words she couldn't although he substituted himself for Penny. This had saved his mum any embarrassment as well relieving her of any need to speak. A few quiet minutes passed as Virginia tried to gather her composure. Roman spoke again. "Perhaps you'd like a moment Virginia" Roman was standing and he seemed to be motioning to Rob silently that he should do something. Rob was puzzled until Roman mouthed the word 'bathroom' silently. Rob got the picture quickly then and spoke to his mum. "Come on mum I'll take you to splash some water on your face while the meals are coming" Rob offered.
"Good idea Penny" Roman answered with his most reassuring smile.
Rob liked Roman, he seemed so considerate and as he accompanied his mother towards the toilet he caught Roman over his shoulder giving him another reassuring smile. Suddenly as they arrived at the door to the ladies room Rob realised where he was headed. He baulked at the doorway and his mum looked at him.
"I can't go in there mum" Rob whispered his protest.
"Nonsense Rob" Virginia responded a little tersely. "It's only a public toilet, you look just like Penny, everyone thinks your a girl, now act like one!"
With that Rob entered a great male unknown as he walked into the ladies with his mum. He realised pretty quickly that it was 'only' a bathroom and not some female sacred site. Virginia ran the water and bathed her face before beginning to reapply what make-up had been ruined. While he waited Rob stared at his image in the big mirrored wall. He turned this way and that, flicked his hair like his sister used too. Pulled a couple of her faces. He was so entranced with how much he looked like Penny he didn't notice his mum was ready to leave.
"Come on Penny, there are plenty of other mirrors in the world" Rob's mum said with a hint of annoyance.
"Your just like your sister when it comes to vanity Rob, I'd swear you just acted exactly like she did" Virginia added with a hint of deja vu.
They returned to their table and Roman stood as they were seated, he was so polite Rob noted. Their drinks were already there and everyone raised their glasses as Roman proposed a toast. "To my newest employee, Virginia Watson" he spoke with such confidence. They all repeated the toast and Rob got a big mouthful of wine unintentionally and swallowed hard. The alcohol took his breath away slightly and he smelt the vapors right through his mouth and nasal passage. He was glad he was siting down. Roman spent ten minutes going through what he needed of his new employee and how she'd have no trouble with the ordering job he had for her. It was about maintaining the stock levels of a range of lines his company sold and dealing with the suppliers of the products.
It involved a little more than Virginia had done previously but she could handle it. While this chatter was going on the meals arrived and Rob was thankful as his vision was a little blurry and he was beginning to feel light headed. He tucked into his meal to avoid any interaction. Roman light heartedly commented on Penny's healthy appetite. Virginia noticing her son was eating normally for him but perhaps as a girl it was a bit voracious decided to follow Roman's lead. "Yes Penny is going on a diet on Monday so she's making the most of last couple of days of food freedom" Virginia giggled at her comment. Both Rob and Virginia knew that this was her first piece of laughter since Penny died. They shared a silent moment at that time.
From left field though trouble struck. Rob nearly feinted when his mum’s new boss said piped up. "Oh yes one more thing, I have a job for Penny as well!"
Rob stopped eating, Virginia was silent and Roman wondered if he hadn't mentioned some magic word that brought silence from those at the table. "Did I say something wrong" he asked?
Another of those now familiar pauses between Virginia and Rob occurred and Rob for once was too dumbfounded to speak. Roman said he wanted both the Watson women at his company and wouldn't take no for an answer.
"Come on ladies, feel free to speak" he continued, just a hint of frustration in his voice.
Rob knew that this might jeopardize his mum's opportunity if he declined, maybe its time to fess up he wondered, although in his current state of inebriation and attire the idea had no appeal at all. He looked at his mum for answers and saw none. He saw Roman's face darkening with every second. Right there he decided on a plan of action and spoke.
"Mr. Willing I'd love to work for you and with my mum, but I don't have any skills and I didn't finish high school. So I'm afraid I'd be no use, but mum is real smart and you need her"
Rob finished and sat back with a triumphant look on his face. He'd done it, accepted the job but made it impossible for Roman to hire him and yet his mum was a certainty.
Roman looked at the young teen for a while in silence before speaking.
"Well Penny thats very honest of you and I like honesty. Tell you what, we have a training scheme for just your situation. We set it up three years ago, we take in someone with no skills but who's willing to work and train them completely while paying them a wage. You are the perfect candidate Penny Watson, welcome to Willing Enterprises!" Roman announced a little more loudly than needed.
A few fellow diners were distracted from their business to look up and notice the blushing teenager accept her first job working alongside her mother.
Virginia had been quiet all this time; firstly in gratitude that Rob would accept the job just for her. That made her heart full of joy. Then to hear Roman find a way to employ her son anyway caused her a little consternation but she rationalised it easily by the fact Rob needed to do something, anything to get him out of the house and not focussing on the negatives in his life. This opportunity would not have come along for him had it not been for the fact he was impersonating his sister. There was no way he would have got an opportunity like this any other way. Penny would have jumped at this opportunity and now Rob was grasping it for her! Virginia knew there would be difficulties for Rob leading the life of his sister each day at work but for her it would be a small pleasure to see her 'daughter' every day. She really missed her closest friend and her lovely daughter. A small tear formed in her eye as she thought of Penny.
Rob's master plan hadn't worked. Somehow he now had a job, as Penny! He decided to say nothing or as little as possible in case things got worse. His mum didn't seem to be offering any assistance either.
Virginia continued chatting to Roman and the topic of her husband came up after a while. Another painful period of explaining that his son's death had affected her husband and that the marriage had descended rapidly into divorce. Virginia didn't even know of her ex husband's whereabouts. Rob knew the story too well and aside from the gender switch of him for Penny, it was all so sadly true.
Roman asked if the two women could start on the following Monday. Virginia was a little concerned as she explained to Roman that she didn't have a wardrobe that would do the new position justice. She remembered the girls and guys who used to work on that department and they were always smartly dressed as they were constantly dealing face to face with buyers and the like. She said she needed time to save up some cash for a shopping trip.
Roman paused then reached inside his jacket pocket. He produced a cheque book and told Virginia not to worry. Roman explained that he was happy to fund his newest employees' wardrobe. He even added that if Virginia wanted to treat herself at her local salon he'd throw the money for that in too. Virginia was staggered by Roman's offer but also grateful. She really wanted this job so much now. She also wanted to do it well. Being able to spruce herself up and get some new clothes was perfect. She promised to pay Roman back but he said she could if she wanted too but it was more important she and Penny got back on their feet financially and this was his way of helping.
Virginia stared at the cheque and was amazed at the amount. Roman was well off she knew but to spend so much in her was embarrassing.
"Roman are you sure, this is a lot of money," Virginia asked?
"Well I want my 'two new employees' to be the smartest looking women in the company and if I have to spend a little to ensure that, then so be it."
Virginia realised her mistake the money was for her and Penny. Rob had been quiet eating through all this discussion but the realization that Roman had just forked out the money to dress and beautify him nearly made him choke on his chicken salad.
"Well I better make some arrangements for a shopping trip tomorrow and a salon session for the weekend if we are going to start on Monday." Virginia responded.
"That's what I like to hear, the voice of a woman ready to shop!" Roman jokingly replied.
"But mum, don't we have things to do this weekend?" Rob asked, hoping to avoid the new situation before him.
"Well, we do now Penny." Virginia countered strongly.
"That's settled then. I will see you two ladies at 9am Monday morning. I'm sure you know how to get there Virginia," Roman added as he asked for the check.
Rob watched as his new boss walked from the small restaurant. He seemed confident and relaxed with the world. Once he was gone Rob turned to his mum with an expression of amazement at what had transpired in the last half hour or so. His mum looked happy and for the first time since Penny's death, she looked relaxed. The tension that accompanied her every expression seemed to be gone for the first time. He reckoned he'd gotten himself into a really foolish situation with the job and all, yet seeing his mum like this made it all worth it, now all he had to do was be Penny for a couple of weeks. Virginia watched her old boss now her new boss leave and she turned her gaze to the large cheque that was going to get her and Penny ready to face the world again. She turned to her son with an expression of thanks for all he had done today. Agreeing to the photo shoot, pretending to be Penny when she found herself in the awkward moment upon meeting Roman again. Then to play the role so well she actually thought Penny was by her side eating lunch. It was a lot to ask of Rob to accept that job and she hoped he would do it, at least for a few months until he got some work experience, life skills and financial stability. After that time he could probably feel capable of being his own man. It was like Penny's legacy to them both she thought.
The two finished their meals and drinks in silence before Virginia got up to leave. Rob who was dreading standing slowly rose to his feet. Virginia asked if he was ok and he said he felt a bit giddy. Most of all though, Rob needed to pee.
"Best we go to the bathroom and freshen you up a bit." Virginia said.
"Yes mum," was all Rob could manage.
Once in the bathroom Virginia ran some cold water and wet her handkerchief. She dabbed Rob brow to cool him down as he seemed to be quite hot. Rob though needed one thing, to empty his bladder. He pulled away from his mother and instinctively looked for a urinal. of course he didn't find one and quickly headed into a stall and found himself battling the urge to release against the struggle to get undressed. Finally he stood with his skirt hiked up under his chin and his pantyhose around his knees relieving himself. Rob was a bit more composed when he came out and washed his hands. Virginia had a question though.
"Honey, did you stand or sit in there?" Virginia enquired.
"Stood mum, why?" Rob answered.
"Well it's just that if your going to be Penny then when you go to the toilet you should sit."
"Are you sure? What's the big deal mum?"
"Ok well it might be nothing but I could sort of tell you weren't squatting. Also if someone was to come in they might be able to see you were facing the wrong way from your shoes. "
"Oh, ok then consider it done mum," Rob answered casually.
Rob was a little too tipsy to argue and his mum probably had a point. They left the restaurant and headed out to the bus exchange to get themselves home. All the way on the bus Rob felt like he was floating. His head was giddy with alcohol and he felt a bit of Dutch courage. When the guy who got on about six stops from their stop Rob couldn't help but return his smile. This guy was maybe sixteen or seventeen and Rob didn't recognise him from anywhere. He was sitting in the row of seats on the other side of the bus and across from Rob. Every time Rob turned in his direction he found him looking. The little flirty game went on for the rest of the ride. Rob didn't know why he was doing it but it seemed like fun to fool this guy.
Their stop came along and Rob and his mum got up to get off. Rob was now standing beside the guy in the aisle as the bus slowed. He looked down and caught his eye again. As the bus stopped abruptly and Rob's body swayed he almost fell into the guys lap! A strong hand on his arm had stopped him. Rob looked to see the young man had prevented his fall. As they parted Rob could not resist winking right at him.
A short walk home and Rob collapsed into an armchair with relief. Virginia felt a bit the same. What a day they both thought. Rob was too drunk to do much and Virginia was too emotionally exhausted to do anything. Three hours later she woke still in the armchair. She gazed across at Rob sleeping off the drinks he'd had. He was still dressed as Penny and made up so beautifully. Virginia just watched her sleeping daughter and felt thankful for this strange opportunity life had given her. Neither Penny nor Rob were big drinkers and that showed at Penny's ease at getting drunk. Virginia caught herself thinking it was actually Penny for a moment. It seemed so easy. Rob dressed like that and putting on his Penny voice had been scarily believable. Virginia was in no doubt he could be Penny anytime he wanted too. She let him sleep some more and went and made dinner.
Rob stirred and noted it was dark outside now, he heard his mum working in the kitchen and the smell of food cooking. Rob looked down to see he was indeed not dreaming he'd been his sister today. He was still dressed as her. He marveled as he remembered the day how easy it had been to do her voice and be her in her clothes. Nobody even came close to suspecting. Rob gave himself a mental pat on the back for his efforts. He heard his mum humming to herself as she cooked. Boy was she ever in a good mood Rob noted. Like her old self he thought. Penny used to help with dinner all the time. Rob decided it can't hurt to be Penny for a little while longer tonight. He got up and wandered to the kitchen
"Anything I can do mum," Rob asked as he leant in the kitchen doorway.
"Um, no I'm right, you can set the table if you like honey."
"Ok." Rob replied and began getting cutlery and plates out.
"Oh damn!" Virginia said.
"What mum?"
"We are out of salt."
"Oh is that bad?"
"Well nothing is going to taste right unless I get some, can you watch this cooking while I walk around to the shop?"
"Mum I have no idea what to do, especially if something goes wrong." Rob said.
"Well then could you go to the shop for me?" Virginia asked.
"Sure thing, I'll just get out of these clothes and get this stuff off my face." Rob replied.
"Um honey, there isn't time for that, I need it as soon as possible, or dinner will be ruined. Couldn't you just knick around there as Penny for me, there's money in my purse." Virginia asked.
"Ok" Rob said slowly after a pause to think about things.
He hadn't really wanted to do that but his mum needed his help and she needed it now. It was only a five minute walk there and back and he had done more as Penny earlier.
"Thanks sweetie. Be as quick as you can."
"Yes mum."
With that Rob was out the door with just the change for salt in his hand. As he began walking down to the store he felt the cooler night air on his legs which were only covered by pantyhose. He also felt the effects of drinking earlier and he felt a little light headed still. He arrived at the store and entered. He had been here plenty of times as Rob but now it was different. His family had move to this neighbourhood just before Penny had passed away, so she wasn't a familiar face around town. He was at the counter waiting to pay for the salt when the guy from the bus walked into the store.
Rob sort of froze as their eyes met. The guy smiled and walked into the store. Rob couldn't help but follow his movements as he waited. He saw the guy round one aisle then look back. Rob caught him looking back at him. The guy caught this hot chick from the bus looking at him. Rob got to the front of the queue and silently paid for his item. He knew the guy was about two customers behind him and he decided not to look back, this could get awkward he thought. Rob left the store and began his walk home.
"Hey wait up!" A voice behind Rob called out.
Rob looked back to see this guy, holding a bag of potatoes coming his way quickly. Rob didn't feel threatened and stopped.
"Hi there," the guy said.
"Hi" was all Rob offered in return.
"You were on the bus today, weren't you?"
"Yes I was." Rob answered thinking he had no idea what this was about.
"Grant, Grant Pullen," the guy introduced himself and put out a hand to shake.
"Penny Watson," Rob cautiously replied as they shook hands.
"Are you new around here Penny?" Grant asked.
"Sort of." Rob replied.
Didn't think I'd seen you before, you live close I guess."
"Yeah down there, number 16." Rob pointed as he spoke before he realised what he had done.
"Oh right, I live over on Oak Avenue, you know it?" Grant said.
"Um yeah I think so, it's about two blocks back the other side of the store isn't it?" Rob answered knowing he knew where Oak was.
"Well I better get going; my mum needs the salt for dinner." Rob answered as he finally realised his situation. He was being chatted up!
"Funny I have to get these back to my mum for the same reason Penny." Grant held the potatoes up to display his point and flashed his winning smile.
"Ok seeya Grant," Rob said nicely as he turned to get home before he got himself in to any trouble.
"Hey Penny, you got a boyfriend," Grant asked as the girl walked away.
"No, of course not!" Rob had sort of snapped that answer out, as if HE would have a BOYFRIEND. Rob kept walking and was realising what he said when Grant called out one more thing.
"Hey Penny, maybe we could see a movie sometime?
Rob stopped but didn't turn around, what had he done, given a boy his address and told him he was single, without even intending it! This guy Grant had just asked him if he wanted to go on a date now. What a cock up Rob thought. Turning and seeing a hopeful Grant standing waiting for an answer he could see he was just a nice guy who was cute and wanted to date a cute girl he'd just met. Rob might have done the same thing, although he doubted he'd have had the courage to risk it, like Grant just had. Got to admire that Rob thought too himself.
"Maybe Grant," Penny said with a smile and a wave as she turned and headed off home.
Rob couldn't believe he'd done that but he couldn't just turn Grant down, it was all harmless enough. He heard Grant shout an 'ok seeya Penny' in the distance. When he turned he could see Grant walking into the darkness with his bag of spuds. Remembering his own errand, Rob bolted inside with the salt. Virginia gave him a concerned look; she had just begun to worry about Rob and about dinner when he came through the door. Maybe making him impersonate Penny was too risky. Rob's kiss on the cheek for his mum and a happy smile on his face made Virginia relax. Noting that, as they ate dinner, Rob had made no effort to change out of his skirt or take his makeup off gave Virginia the resolve to continue with their plan.
Dinner was great and the two watched TV for a few hours. Rob didn't get changed all night. When it got late Virginia told Rob she'd help with getting the makeup off and teach him how to do it, if he was ok with that. Rob was cool with it and they adjourned to the bathroom where Virginia spent a long time taking her son through the art of makeup removal and also some tried and true tips about the whole concept. Rob listened intently. At last Rob was back as himself again and wearing a pair of track pants and a t-shirt. Virginia had to ask a question.
"Honey I have to thank you for today. If I hadn't been blown away by your courage to play Penny when Roman came over I don't think any of the good fortune that showered us would have happened. Thank You." Virginia said this from the heart.
"That's Ok mum. I am just glad to see you smiling again. And maybe between us we can earn enough to get back on track with the finances." Rob added.
"I have to ask honey. Are you totally sure about this job thingy? I don't want to feel like your doing this for me or anything, it's a big thing to ask of someone you know." Virginia had to allow Rob a chance to back out.
"Mum, I am doing it for you but I'm also doing it for Penny. She deserved to get this chance and now I'm sort of giving it to her, if that makes sense. And nobody will ever know. I feel like I could be her anytime, anywhere in any situation. Besides I wasn't going to get a job lying around here moping." Rob's words were sincere and he felt more than ready for this challenge.
"Well sleep on it dear and if you're still sure, we will go shopping tomorrow," Virginia reminded her son of another requirement of the ploy.
"Sure thing mum, I am damn tired though. I'm going to bed." Rob said.
"Ok sweetie sleep well." Rob's mum added with a kiss on the forehead.
Night mum," Rob said over his shoulder as he headed to bed.
Virginia washed her own makeup off and got ready for bed. She worried this whole charade might not work, but if Rob was willing so she would be. Virginia Watson had her best sleep for a long time that night.
Rob too slept well, more though because he was sleeping off the effects of the most alcohol he'd even consumed in one day. He heard his mum calling him as the sun streamed through a crack in the bedroom curtains. He got up and made his way to the kitchen where Virginia was dishing up breakfast.
As they ate Virginia sized up her son. She was already thinking about his wardrobe and other things relating to him working as Penny.
When breakfast was done Virginia began telling Rob that if they were going to do this 'Penny thing' they had better get started. Rob wasn't so hot on the idea in the cold light of day but he knew how much it meant to his mother. One more 'are you sure' from Virginia met with Rob's agreement.
"Well then Penny, best we get you ready for a day of shopping," Virginia announced.
"Ok mum, where do we start?" Rob asked.
"In the bathroom dear. We need to see if we can get you looking as much like you did yesterday without a makeup artist's help."
With that Rob followed his mum to the bathroom where she instructed him to strip down and slip on a pair of Penny's old panties. Rob felt a bit weird doing that but he also knew it was part of the deal. With his mum busying herself with lipstick and mascara Rob tucked his equipment away as best he could. Virginia handed Rob a pair of control top pantyhose and told him put them on. She explained how the control part would 'keep things in place' for him. This done Virginia proceeded to slip a bra on her son and stuff it with tissues. This time though she didn't put quite so many in. Virginia once again used the styling wand to give Rob a feminine do, much like Penny used to wear hers. She was glad Rob had resisted her nagging for him to get a haircut now. The basics were now in place and Virginia went to work on her son's face, mascara, foundation, blush, eyeliner, eye shadow, lipstick and a spray of perfume. Rob looked back at Penny in the mirror and pulled a couple of her faces with ease. Virginia watched and realised Rob was having no trouble at all pretending to be Penny. The two then headed to Penny's room for an outfit.
Rob was thinking jeans and a t-shirt for Friday morning shopping, while Virginia was thinking simple dress, so as to make trying on clothes easier. Mum won the day. Rob left his sister's room in one of her cotton sun dresses, which was lavender and had buttons all the way up the front. Virginia made Rob put on a white satin slip because the dress was a tad sheer in the right light. A pair of white court shoes with a low heel finished him off.
Complete with purse Rob and his mum left the house in the bright early summer light, in fact it may have only been 10am but it was already a warm day.
The two walked to the bus stop and waited. Not long later Rob and his mum were at the big shopping mall again only this time they had a different reason to be there. Virginia just wandered around for a while with the intention of allowing Rob to relax enough to begin their task. She saw an outfit just right for her first and soon Rob was standing outside a changing stall as his mum slipped into the skirt and jacket she had seen. She looked great and Rob reckoned she should buy it. So a short time later they walked out with the first of half a dozen outfits that Virginia needed. Finally she looked at Rob and asked if he was ready to do the same, with a deep breath Rob nodded and they headed to some of the boutiques for younger women and girls.
The first stop found Rob in a change room slipping out of his dress and sliding into a beige blouse and black skirt. He managed to get dressed and his mum came in to appraise things. She thought this was a good start but noted he might need a different pair of shoes than what he was wearing. Virginia was trying to recall Penny's shoe collection in her head trying to decide if there was a pair Rob could wear. The next two or three shops bought some more outfits and with half a dozen bags in his arms Rob said he needed to sit down. His feet were hurting.
As they sipped a coffee Virginia said Rob's feet might be a bit a bigger than Penny's. If he wanted too they could shop for a pair of shoes each. Rob said that if it meant having comfort then he'd be ok with it. An hour later both Rob and his mum had a new pair of shoes. Rob's were black heels with about three inches of heel and a pointy toe. He thougth to himself that he'd like to see a chick in these with a short skirt, if only that chick wasn't him. Rob now owned two new dresses in a very business style. A couple of blouses four skirts including one that was pretty short. A pair of new shoes and now his mum had im in initmate apparel as she hunted out a couple of new bras for herself.
Virginia picked out a couple of really delicate bras in black and white and a tan one to go with a sheer shirt she'd bought. She also grabbed a couple of pairs of knickers as well. She turned to Rob with a serious face and quietly suggested he might need to get some things here. Rob was a little stressed with that idea but his mum coaxed him into picking out some nice underwear and matching bra's. She found the style with quite a bit of padding, which would mean Rob wouldn't need to stuff them. With a great handful of lingerie Rob stood and paid for it all. Virginia suggested it might be a good exercise for him to go through as he didn't want to be in some similar situation and freeze. It all went as if nothing was unusual and the salesgirl didn't even bat an eyelid, this made Rob more confident.
When they hit the hosiery section Rob actually picked out all of his own purchases. He chose things by thinking what he'd like to see a girl wearing. His mum grabbed some of her things and Rob raised an eyebrow when his mum bought some stockings in black.
"Mum how come you bought those? Aren't they sort of a bit sexy?" Rob asked.
"Well yes, but I didn't buy them for that reason honey." Virginia replied. "They are quite comfortable in the warmer weather. Pantyhose can trap a lot of stale air around the um, crotch you can feel a bit uncomfortable on really hot days," she explained.
"Oh, ok then. Should I get some then?" Rob asked.
"Well I guess you could, there is a garter belt of Penny's at home, and we could try them and see how you feel about them when we get home." Virginia answered.
"Ok well do I get black?" Rob asked.
"Sure honey, that's a good start." Virginia said.
Rob plucked a pair of stockings in his size from the rack and headed to the counter with his purchases, he paid for all his things himself. Virginia and Rob decided they had had enough of shopping for the day and with their huge haul headed to the bus stop.
"I will ring and make an appointment at a salon for tomorrow honey and we need to buy you some make-up and perfume and things. Penny's make-up is a bit dated now I suspect."
"Ok mum, you're the boss." Rob replied in perfect a Penny voice.
"Honey I can't get over how much you are like Penny. It's frightening sometimes."
"Well mum, I find it so easy, it is frightening."
The two waited in the bus shelter and tried to manage their bundles of shopping which threatened to get away from them in the unusually breezy afternoon.
From out of nowhere there was a persistent car horn honking. It took a while but Rob finally recognised the person in the passenger seat. It was Grant; he was with his mum who was driving. He got out and came over to the bus stop and asked if they needed a lift. Virginia was confused as she had no idea who this young man was until Rob said he knew Grant. Grant insisted his mum drive them home seeing as they were going past their street anyway. Virginia was confused but agreed when Rob whispered he'd explain later. They were loading their things into Joy Pullen's boot and Rob was whispering a quick explanation to Virginia as he did so. Virginia and Joy introduced themselves to each other.
"It appears our children know each other already Virginia." Joy noted as Rob and his mum slipped into the back seat.
"Yes so it seems." Virginia answered a little cautiously.
"You made quite an impression on my son Penny. He nearly killed us getting me to pull over back there." Joy said as she drove off.
"Sorry Mrs. Pullen I didn't mean too." Rob answered honestly.
"That's ok Penny, nice to see Grant making female friends."
"Mum!" Grant snapped a little embarrassed.
The rest of the ride was filled with idle chatter about where they lived and the hot weather and all that shopping. Virginia was guarded without all the facts but was happy enough to talk about their new jobs and how good it would be to be back working. As they pulled up outside Rob and Virginia's house and they were preparing to get out Grant swung around from the front seat and spoke.
"So Penny, you want to see a movie tomorrow night?"
"Um, I'm not sure." was Rob's nonplused response.
"You'll have to forgive my son ladies; he has his father's directness when it comes to asking questions." Joy was almost apologetic.
"I mean if that's ok with you Mrs. Watson?" Grant asked nicely.
"Well I never tell Penny what to do, she's a big girl." Virginia replied.
Viginia Watson had never perceived this situation but as she waited for Rob to respond she realised that this was going to be an occupational hazard for her son whenever he was Penny. On one hand she didn't think it was such a great idea, yet on the other if Rob was going to be Penny he had to behave as a female and as such she was going to be asked out. In the end Virginia figured it might be a learning experience for Rob and it might be better now, rather than later. This also seemed pretty harmless too.
Grant asked again if Penny would like to go to the movies. Rob was under pressure, he wanted to get out of the car, get his things and get inside. On the other hand with Grant's mum sitting there and his own mum seemingly ok with things by not putting a hurdle up he found himself feeling as though it would be rude not to accept. Grant wasn't going to be anything other than a gentleman Rob thought; he was a 'nice' guy. How could he say no in this situation?
"Ok Grant, I'd be happy to see a movie with you." Rob said.
"Great ok, well your choice, I'll pick you up at say seven, mum can you drive us?" Grant was a little exuberant and it showed.
"Sure honey, if its ok with Virginia I'll drive round and pick up Penny and drop you both at the pictures." Joy replied.
"That's fine by me Joy." Virginia said.
"Ok it's a date then!" Grant almost shouted.
"It's just a movie Grant, calm down a little." Joy said.
"Sorry mum."
"Actually I think you need too get out more Grant." Joy joked and laughed.
"Ok well thanks for the lift and we will probably see each other tomorrow." Virginia said getting out of the car.
"No worries Virginia, if your ever up for a coffee I'm sure Penny will have our number by the time she's home from the movies." Joy added.
"Yes thanks, this job will keep us both busy for a couple of weeks but once things settle it would be nice, thanks Joy."
As they waved to the vanishing car Virginia leant over and said "now best you tell me the whole story honey." Rob just rolled his eyes and headed inside. An hour later both of them knew all there was to know. Virginia also explained her rationale for not interfering. She would never have stopped Penny from such things and as Penny, Rob was going to have to get used to this kind of thing. Rob wasn't sure what he'd gotten himself into and he wasn't sure what laid in store either. Virginia did make him feel better by offering her opinion on Grant, whom she felt was a nice young man who was genuine and someone who would be safe to be around.
Needless to say Rob spent too much time over anlysing this 'date' in his mind as he lay in bed that night. He figured Grant to be that really nice type that wasn't about to take any liberties or risks with a girl on a date and Rob also knew that now that his mum and Grant's mum knew each other he was less likely to act up. That considered Rob relaxed enough to sleep.
The next day started early and with a similar routine to the previous day. Before long Rob found himself under a hairdryer having had a cut and colour. He soon had his first manicure where he swore he recognized the girl doing his nails, in a shade of light purple. Her small talk made Rob nervous so he said as little as possible. Virginia went through similar treatments and kept a watchful eye on her son is this most female bastion. She was surprised at how well he pulled off being Penny and for a moment as she chatted to him Virginia lost herself in the mother daughter bonding she'd always wanted to have with Penny.
It was 2pm when they got home and Rob flopped on the couch a little tired and a little emotional even after his two days of female nirvana. He had a great hair style, for a chick and the nails he now sported left no doubt he was in girl mode.
He asked his mum if he could veg out on the play station for a while and Virginia was more than able to cut her son that slack. He had been so wonderful through all this and she didn't know how she was ever going to be able to say thank you for all his efforts. Rob began to return to his old self a little when he slipped on his sweat pants and a grungy old t-shirt he loved and fired up his favourite game. He had trouble though as his new stuck on nails made the controls difficult to master. No high scores today he figured. He lost track of time when he heard his mum calling him fro dinner. It was 5pm as Rob ate a light meal because Virginia thought he might fill up on popcorn later. Rob loved popcorn.
"What are you going to see honey?" Virginia asked.
"Not sure mum, I'd love to see that new action movie that just came out." Rob replied.
"Um dear perhaps that something Penny might choose, remember your not Mr. action man tonight." she reminded him.
"Good point mum, what do you reckon?" Rob asked.
"Hmmm... how about that romantic comedy that got such good reviews, the one you read out to me last week."
"Bit of a chick flick mum."
"Yes... exactly."
"Oh, yeah, I see what you mean. Ok guess I'll choose that." Rob was thankful for his mum's advice.
"Now the bathroom mister, we need to get you ready." Virginia said.
"It's only 5:20 mum."
"Honey this isn't going to the shops or the salon this is going to the movies, with a boy. This is more of a military operation than before. Now I want you in the shower and quickly and use my shower cap, as your hair is ready to go." Virginia said seriously.
"Ok mum I get it."
"Oh and wash with that bath gel, you'll smell much nicer," she added.
Rob headed to the bathroom and ran the shower. He winced a little as he slipped the pink shower cap over his hair and tucked it underneath. He found using the bath gel smelly but ok otherwise. He was toweled and dried and wearing a bathrobe when Virginia knocked to come in. For the next hour Virginia plucked and spruced her son with all the care a mother would give to her daughter on her first date with a boy. Rob saw Penny more than ever in the mirror. Virginia made Rob do his lipstick two or three times as she said he would have to touch it up himself during the night. She explained that when you eat and drink you leave it behind and Rob needed to check his lips regularly to make sure it didn't look messed up. The rest should be ok mum advised. With that they moved to the bedroom.
Rob found Penny's bed already had an outfit laid out on it. He looked to his mum who smiled reassuringly. While he had been washing Virginia had been choosing, she wanted just the right outfit for her daughter's big night. Virginia had always looked forward to this day from the moment she had given birth to Penny and Rob, although she had always figured it would be Penny by her side. Now though she was lost in the emotional turmoil of events and saw only her daughter, waiting to be enveloped by feminine things as she gushed about her first boy date and maybe a first kiss. Virginia had fussed all day mentally and then for the whole of Rob's shower sorting through items to get just the right outfit. At this moment it was fair to say she didn't see her son but her daughter there with her.
Piece by piece Rob donned his female attire until he stood in a black skirt with tan control top pantyhose and black sandals with a clear plastic spike heel. These were a pair of shoes Penny had bought with the intention of wearing out when she got better. She never got to wear them. They felt a bit tight but the look on mum's face convinced Rob he had to say nothing. He felt exposed in the skirt as the dresses he'd worn so far had been longer. This skirt showed his knees and thigh if he sat down. Over a rather helpful padded bra plus a few tissues Rob wore a red blouse he had trouble buttoning up with nails and a black jacket in suede. Virginia also convinced Rob to wear some of Penny's jewelry and he ended up with two necklaces on as well as a charm bracelet on his wrist. A small gold ring with a red stone was also added; a set of clip on ear rings with a similar stone finished the job.
Virginia looked at the clock witch said 7:10pm and for a brief moment hoped there wasn't a stand-up happening. A knock on the door quelled her fears and for Rob the knock set his heart pounding. Virginia saw Rob's look and answered the door for him. Grant was standing there in a nice young man's outfit, of shirt and pants and nice shoes. He was holding a small bunch of flowers as he greeted Virginia with a bit of a dry hello. Virginia knew instantly that this might well be Grant's first date with a girl and he was certainly very nervous. She smiled an assuring smile and beckoned the boy to come in. Two nervous hellos to each other and Grant handed Rob the flowers. Virginia saved the frozen moment by offering to put them in water for Penny.
"Well best you two get going, I'm sure Grant's mum doesn't want to be sitting running the engine all night out there." Virginia joked.
"Yes, ok, well, nice to see you again Mrs. Watson." Grant quickly replied.
"Call me Virginia, that's my name Grant." Virginia added light heartedly.
"Of course, yes sorry about that." Grant was almost stumbling over his words.
"Goodbye dear, have a nice night and enjoy the movie." Virginia said to her son.
"Thanks mum, I will, I mean we will, um" Rob stammered.
"Ok, off you go before someone dies of embarrassment." Virginia joked again.
With a peck on the cheek for her son Virginia waved the couple out the door and acknowledged Joy Pullen with a wave from the front step of the porch. She watched as Grant exuberantly opened the door for Penny and made sure she was safely inside the car before racing to his side and hopping in. With a smile Joy backed the car from the drive and headed into the fading twilight. Virginia then said a silent prayer for her son to be safe tonight.
Rob sat in the back seat of the Pullen's car and hoped this wasn't all going to end up in a disaster. His resolve was melting and he hoped he could pull off this charade.
"Hello again Penny, you look lovely." Joy remarked over her shoulder as she backed the car from the drive. "Doesn't she Grant?" was added for her sons sudden muteness.
"Oh yes she does, I mean you do Penny." Grant finally managed to say.
"Thank you Mrs. Pullen," was all Rob managed to say, his nerves rising.
"So kids what movie is it tonight then?" Joy asked.
"Ladies choice mum." Grant responded.
"What are we going to see Penny?" Grant asked.
"How about Fool's Paradise, I read it was pretty good." Rob answered.
"I wanted to see that." Joy replied from the front seat.
"Ok cool." Grant answered but Rob knew deep in his heart that Grant probably wanted to see Action Squad, like Rob would have.
For a moment Rob felt like asking Mrs. Pullen if she wanted to join them seeing as she wanted to see that film. Might as well be one chick at the chick flick. The moment passed and Rob knew deep down this was a date and a big date for Grant at that. It wasn't long before the car arrived outside the theatre and grant was around holding the door open for his date. Rob noted Grant's mum must have drilled him well on the art of caring for a lady and he smiled to himself at the niceness of the whole feeling of being treated like gold. A few quick words and an agreement to be picked up at 11pm 'right here' by Grant's mum and she was off into the night.
The two teens stood at the curb and scanned the movie times. Neither wanted to be the first to speak or move before Grant said "ok lets go inside and get the tickets." Rob walked slowly because his heels were difficult and felt like he was swaying all over the shop.
"So we'll get two tickets for Fool's Paradise then Penny?" Grant asked.
"Sure if you want to see that." Rob replied without any enthusiasm.
Grant picked up on Rob's lack of interest and being the good date asked if there was a problem. On the drive over Rob got more and more determined to see Action Squad and hatched a plan. He figured Grant would do whatever he asked so he should be able to convince Grant to switch movie choices.
"Not really Grant, maybe something else. How about that movie something squad?" Rob sort of slowed his speech and tried to act a little uninformed.
"Well if you're sure Penny, it's your choice but I'd love to see that movie." Grant almost raced to the ticket window in case he heard wrong.
Rob waited back from the window and smiled in triumph. This wasn't half bad. He gets to see a movie he's been dying to see and someone else pays for him. He even got chauffeured to the theatre. And what had it cost him? Nothing, except he had to be Penny Watson. This girl stuff has its advantages Rob noted, he looked at Grant shelling out for two tickets eagerly. A guy could get used to this Rob thought. They loaded up on candy and popcorn and coke and headed to the theatre screening Action Squad. It was pretty full as it was the hot hit in town right now and they had to squeeze past quite a few people including a row of about five guys who seemed keen on brushing against Rob legs if they could. They found their seats and settled in watching the trailers.
Rob gorged on his popcorn and as usual downed it with much coke as he enjoyed his date. He stayed pretty much to himself as he didn't want Grant to get any ideas. About three quarters into the movie Rob felt a hand on his hand and looked into the gloom at Grant who was watching the movie. Sure enough though, he was lightly holding Rob's hand. Rob wasn't sure about this but didn't think he should simply pull away. Another problem arose though. Rob needed to pee!
Normally he could make it through a movie but in his nervous state at home he had forgotten to go. He tried crossing his legs but that did nothing but show off his thighs in the half light. Because he had meticulously tucked his equipment back and away before tightly binding himself in panties and pantyhose he could not get the purchase needed to put things off for a while. His equipment was pointing back and under him and he couldn't simply reach under his skirt and rearrange things. Rob began to feel a few drops leek out and knew he had to go. Rob leaned over to Grant and whispered he had to use the bathroom, and Grant asked if Penny wanted him to escort her. Rob was elated Grant would leave right in the key point in the movie just to walk him to the toilet but he told him to stay there and that she would be back. Rob though was cursing his plumbing as he knew he was going to miss the best part of the movie. The squeeze past those guys was a little more worrying as now not only was Rob on his own, he was blocking the movie for these guys. The contact was more obvious than before but he resisted saying anything as he felt a hand on his leg close to his skirt hem. He even heard one of them comment about dumb chicks ruining a good movie. That hurt but Rob didn't look back. He just forged on and out.
In the lobby Rob looked for the signs to the toilets. He was fair busting now and he tried to keep his legs together and still walk in heels towards the bathrooms. It was a most unusual waggle he had up by the time he reached them. Of course he looked up sadly at the picture of a woman on the door, knowing he had to enter this other dimension. Get used to it he told himself as he pushed through into the female sanctum. He expected to just hit a stall and let go but what he hadn't counted on was the place being full. Women, old, young, going about their business including queuing for the right to use one of the two stalls. Rob stood behind the last woman in the queue and prayed he could hold on. Rob tried to concentrate on other things and looked around at more than a handful of other teenage girls at the mirrors making themselves hot! Their chatter was about boys, clothes, hair and boys. Rob almost went into a coma of concentration as he felt another couple of leeks get away from him. He felt a warm feeling in his panties now as the dampness spread a little. He reckoned he had moments before the dam burst. His situation must have been obvious, to at least the woman in front of him who quietly asked if she would like to move up in the queue. Rob simply nodded vigorously and at the same time a stall became free. Finally inside Rob nearly ripped his pantyhose off and down his legs to his knees along with his panties and fortunately he remembered to sit, not stand. As he relaxed he inspected his wet crotched panties. Nothing but to live with that he thought as he soaked up some of the dampness with toilet paper. He re-dressed after getting his willy back in place and left the stall to find the teen girl count down to two who were leaving while the woman who'd let him move up was at the sinks. Rob stepped up beside her to wash his hands.
"A word of advice, he might be hot, but never leave your bladder on hold for him." The quiet words from the woman told Rob he had much to learn about being the girl.
As she left and other women came in Rob tried to remember what his mum had said about make up. Oh yeah lipstick. Rob realised though the handbag he brought with him was under his seat next to Grant. Damn, oh well I'll do it when I get back he decided silently to himself.
Rob returned and knew he was again going to have fumble past those guys. He considered sitting the movie out down near the exit but that wasn't right. Nothing for it, he was a woman and he needed to be treated better. So with steel in his resolve Rob glided up the steps to his aisle and worked his way past the guys. The fact he rather roughly ground his spike heel into a couple of feet made his passing easier, it did force one comment that Rob thought was 'slut' but he didn't quite hear it so he let it go. Back safe in his seat with grant Rob was more than happy to let Grant hold his hand now. Really that couldn't be worse than what he'd been through the last ten or fifteen minutes. he knew not to ask what he'd missed and he tried to pick up things, he knew also he could get a blow by blow from Grant afterwards if things didn't make sense. Grant's increasing friendly grip on Rob's hand told Rob he had another situation building.
The movie ended but Rob was more interested in the guys down the aisle in case they seemed like trouble. As the lights began to go up Rob wanted to make sure he didn't leave his seat right away and that the guys knew he wasn't alone. Rob looked closely at Grant who was reading the credits but still carefully holding his hand. Rob pondered for a moment and then he knew what he had to do. Leaning over and closing his eyes Rob planted a kiss on Grant's mouth. Grant got a shock but responded. Rob kept up his kissing for a good minute or two in the hope when he looked around those guys would be gone. This action worked as Rob broke the kiss and looked around the place was emptying including the guys who'd already reached the exit. One problem solved for Rob meant the beginning of another as Grant insisted on holding his hand as they walked down the steps into the lobby.
Now out in the light and walking through the theatre Rob realised he was now holding hands with a guy, a guy he'd just kissed! The hand holding turned to an arm around his waist as Rob found himself matching strides with his date, which was hard in his shoes. Rob could do nothing but be escorted as Grant led them to a coffee shop in the complex. Rob was soon sitting in a booth and a waitress was taking orders from the couple for coffee. They sat side by side and Rob was pinned in by Grant. As they waited for their drinks Rob saw the clock on the wall said 9:15, what time did Joy say she would pick them up? 11pm! Rob now knew it was 'killing time' time. Rob also knew from his dates with girls that this time was meant for getting to know you stuff. A hand on his thigh confirmed this as Grant began to ask things about his date like movie likes and stuff. Rob took the chance to allow Grant to bring him up to speed on the bits he'd just missed from their movie. All the while Rob watched the clock when he could and sipped on a milkshake he'd ordered. Grant was rapt. This girl Penny had kissed him! Not only that she was hot! Not only that she liked Action Squad! Not only that she was hot! Grant hoped 11pm would never arrive.
A short while later something else arrived. Three guys sat down in their booth and began their greetings with Grant who they obviously knew. Rob found himself shaking hands and being introduced to these mates of Grant's who seemed surprised he was out with a girl. Penny got plenty of questions now as the four guys compared movie notes on Action Squad and she was rather flattered she was asked her opinion. Rob thought the guys probably wanted to know about Grant's date but would wait till they spoke alone for that. Rob felt intimidated now and kept quiet if he could and just downed his milkshake only to find one of the guys had ordered more. Rob was suddenly swimming in drinks as he tried to be polite. This time when the call of nature loomed Rob was ready. He excused himself with a gentle hand on Grant's shoulder and asked if he could let him out. As he got up and let Rob out Grant gave his date a cuddle and a squeeze followed by a peck on the cheek for good measure. A red faced Rob headed to the bathroom as quick as he could.
This time there was no waiting and ample time and privacy to do his lips. Besides when he saw how smudged they were from eating, drinking and kissing Rob was a bit shocked. Freshly painted he returned to his uncomfortable situation.
"So Penny. You're new around here huh?" The guy Rob now knew as Steve asked."Yeah I am." Rob replied as he slid back into his prison beside Grant. The clock said 9:55pm
"So who wants to get a beer?" The guy Rob knew as Warren suggested.
"Not sure about that." Grant said which made Rob feel better. There was no way he wanted to be drinking with four guys just now.
"We are being picked up at 11pm", Rob piped up in support.
"Oh well your loss guys." Steve said and within a flash the three visitors were gone.
"I hope you don't mind me blowing them off Penny?" Grant asked.
"Not at all, you know two's company and all that," Rob spouted.
"I agree, hey its early, want to walk home?" Grant suggested.
"Um well I'm not sure, what about your mum?" Rob wasn't sure about this change in plan.
"I'll call her, no sense hanging around here till 11pm," Grant said. "I mean if we'd seen Fool's Paradise we'd still be in watching," he added.
"Well if you think its ok" Rob didn't want to seem uneasy which he wasn't but he didn't want to change the plan too much either.
"Come on its not cold and it will only take twenty minutes.
"Well ok, but you have to ring your mum ok." Penny implored.
"Yep lets do that now." Grant answered.
"Ok Grant." Penny accepted.
They left the coffee shop and headed to the phone booths where a quick chat with Joy, who seemed to ask Grant a thousand questions about his plan before saying yes.
Five minutes later they were strolling home along the well lit streets. Grant was holding Penny's hand and making small talk about how pretty she looked and how much he liked her. Rob found the flattery flattering and soaked it up. He felt a bit giddy with the whole scene. Being treated like a princess was sure intoxicating for Rob. When hand holding turned to walking arm in arm Rob felt on top of the world. Even a guy likes to be wanted. Grant was there all the way heaping praise on his date, telling her she was beautiful and he felt so lucky to have some time with her and Rob was lapping it up when they stopped and Grant drew Penny to him and kissed her passionately!
Time suddenly stood still for Grant and Penny. The odd car horn honking did nothing to deter the two young canoodlers. Rob finally caught himself and broke the embrace with the excuse they better get moving as it was getting late. Reluctantly Grant agreed and they continued their walk home. For the next five minutes walking Rob was beside himself with confusion, the roadside pash had caught him off guard but he wasn't sure he didn't like it. How could he like being kissed by a guy? Sure he could tell Grant really liked him and it had been nice being treated so nicely and complimented. Was being a girl all about being wanted? Was that behaviour from a guy enough to turn him into some kind of female princess?
Grant's hand had begun caressing Penny's backside as they strolled. Grant's compliments continued, being told how cool you are when you've spent more than a year in a grief filled funk was doing Rob's head in. It seemed all too easy for Rob too accept this ego boosting chat and it was easy to allow Grant to continue to fondle his backside. And it was also easy for Rob to say yes when Grant asked Penny if she'd like to see another movie tomorrow night.
Grant was over the moon. How had he arrived at this place in his life, where, only a few days ago he was wondering if he'd ever meet a girl. He had had a couple of brief courtships in recent years but he was no stud with the ladies. Then on a trip to the store he meets Penny Watson, by chance they chat and Grant seems to be able to say all the right things at the right time. In fact he even thinks Penny likes him. Now they have shared a movie and the topper was, without prompting, Penny had kissed him. Right there in the movie theatre, and it was not when the lights were out. Grant could tell his mates were more than impressed with the girl by his side. Penny was cute, yet somehow she seemed to understand guys. She liked action movies and really knew her stuff. She was sort of tom-boyish but sort of not. Sometimes she seemed confident and relaxed and others quite vulnerable, almost scared to be a girl. Grant felt she liked to be told how pretty she was but also was embarrassed to hear it. He loved her new hair style in particular. When he had arrived to pick her up and saw her for the first time dressed up, he almost lost his voice. Her mum was nice and Grant's mum and her got on well.
Now on a quiet walk home from the movies they had made out for ages. Yet penny had the sense to not let things get out of hand. As they walked Grant found Penny more than happy to be close and he couldn't contain himself and rushed his request for a second date. He hadn't given it any thought and suggested another movie. When Penny said yes quickly Grant was happy it had all worked out ok. So in the space of a day or so Grant had become quite taken with this girl, he just hoped things would keep getting better.
The couple reached Penny's house at around 10:50 and they began to say their goodbyes. As they lingered out the front the goodbyes turned to a cuddle which turned to a goodnight kiss which turned into a long passionate embrace.
At 11:15 Penny broke the embrace and with a smile and a wave walked backwards up her drive waving to Grant who loitered until Penny disappeared inside her front door.
Rob was up in the air and confused even more. He'd almost fallen over his words to accept another movie date, why had he done that? Worse still he had had a second snog with Grant at his front gate; it felt nice though having someone want him that much. At one point Rob felt he didn't want the night to end, how could be thinking that, was he gay? How come Grant made him feel so special like he was the most important person on earth? It was great to have someone to share thoughts with and Grant seemed to be on the same wavelength as Rob. They had chatted about movies and sport and stuff and they shared so much in common.
This had to stop Rob decided, after tomorrow night Rob would tell Grant he just wanted to be friends as his new job was going to be really hard. Rob didn't think he could ever tell Grant he was a guy, which would be too tough on Grant as he was so nice. Rob's mum wasn't up as he quietly locked up the house and made his way to his bedroom. Her bedroom was darkened so he didn't bother to disturb her. In the bathroom Rob did his best to remove his makeup before slipping out of his feminine attire and heading to bed. He slipped on his most manly shorts to sleep in. His sleep though was punctured with thoughts of his date.
Virginia had been unable to contain herself and watched from her bedroom window as her son made out with this nice young man named Grant. She began to question her request of Rob to be Penny for a day and how it had taken on a life all of its own when they ran into Roman. Were things out of hand? Could the situation be resolved if need be? Did Rob want to stop this? She had so many questions. Though as she watched the way Penny made her way inside Virginia wondered if she hadn't manufactured a daughter.
Grant practically skipped all the way home. He spent a mainly sleepless night thinking about the new girl in his life. Penny Watson was all that, and more! Grant couldn't wait for the next date with Penny.
