I've been avoiding Thelema like the plague. I'll start with that possibly heretical statement. I say this because although I haven't done much work myself, I have learned to recognize that religions do not encourage mystical experience in their practitioners. Some take steps to ensure it never happens which I find both disturbing and amusing because religions are born from the spiritual pregnancy of mystical experience. "New" religions are no different. Over the past 10 years, I've watched the pagan community in Ottawa become less magical and more religious. Paganism seems less to do with communion with the wild spirits than with hodge-podge dogma and 'community'. Well enough of paganism. My point is that with the abundance of 93 and Love under Will signatures in emails and board postings, Thelema has, for me, the faint odour of religion and again, for me, religion is a spiritual toilet.
I have my preferred authors, Israel Regardie, Christopher Hyatt and I've been reading some of Lon Milo DuQuette's books, on recommendation from a friend. Enter The Magick of Aleister Crowley by Lon Milo DuQuette.
