San Francisco
I lived in San francisco for a few months before I moved to Boston and it was enough time for me to fall completely in love with this city. San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the US behind NY. It`s located on the tip a of a mountanious penisula on the North American west coast, and it`s one of the most beautiful and magical places I`ve ever been. Because it`s a compact city, much of its Central Area is walkable. Its many hills make the walks very tiring, but they are arguably San Francisco`s most well known attributes. The ethnic mixture of its neighborhoods, its sightseeing and its historical contribution make a more precise and well deserved description of its full beauty a dificult task.

"Frisco", as it`s called by its natives, is a fairly new city. The outsiders of California originally discovered it in the mid XVIII century and it was then colonized by the Spanish, who built many prisions and missions. It had its first jump in development in the XIX century, when gold was found nearby. Prospectors from all over the world were attracted to California and soon, by 1870, San Francisco became internationally known for its newly discovered prosperity and its coast`s indisputable yet wild beauty. There was a huge earthquake followed by a fire in 1906 that destroyed much of the city, but it was soon rebuilt.
San Francisco had a big role in US history. After the Second World War, the city of San Francisco was chosen to host the foundation of the UN in 1945, and it also became the center of the Beat Generation (50's) and of the hippie movement in the 60's. Even though it was one of the most prosperous cities in the US, it was affected by AIDS and a rise in homelessness. It was also the site of many pacifist and civil rights demostrations.
San Francisco`s museums and art galleries put it in a prominent position among the biggest Art Centers in the world. The Contemporary art displayed in the Museum of Modern Art and the Center for the Arts, plus the science museums such as the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences are good examples of this city`s artistic richness represented in the form of paintings, sculpture, photography and design.

Curiosity: The album The Stonewall Celebration Concert (1994) by Renato Russo (Brazil), was recordered, among other reasons, in celebration of the 30 years of the Stonewall riot, when near the corner of Stonewall and Christopher Street, in San Francisco, there were fights between policemen and gay people who were fighting against prejudice.
