Hidden Treasure
Yorktown Beach
The Hampton Roads area offers many places to go and things to do. In fact, some of the entertainment and attractions in the area are known worldwide. Because our area is growing so rapidly, many of the small native areas are often overlooked. One native place that is definitely on the rise and is still somewhat unknown to many people is Yorktown Beach. With its beautiful Coleman Bridge backdrop one can escape the daily struggles and duties to relax in the cool breeze coming off the river. Although it is not comparable to a major beach, Yorktown Beach still has very much to offer for everyone. It has always been a place where you can spend the day relaxing in the warm crystals of sand and cooling off in the chilly still water, but just recently Yorktown developers have added so many more things to see and do in that area. Some attractions at Yorktown Beach include trinket shopping, fine dining, historical museums, or taking scenic tours.
It has been very interesting to me because I grew up in York County and have been able to see all the changes that have occurred at the beach. I can remember when I was a kid, it seemed like all they had there was stinky, dirty water and sand with broken glass and seaweed washed up along the shore with a couple run down places to eat. However, now Yorktown Beach has really taken off. One thing that really sticks out to me with this attraction is that it has a lot to offer for every age group. It's a place where you can bring your family, or if you're a college-age person you can hang out at the ice cream shop with your friends. They also have a variety of annually scheduled events that go on throughout the year.
All the newer things at   Yorktown Beach can be found in an area called Riverwalk Landing.  The vintage inspired businesses finished renovating and the opening of this new area was about a year ago. The outcome was very historical looking with crisp bright white trim around the edges. The Riverwalk Landing includes some antique and specialty shops, arts and craft stores, as well as places to eat. There is also a museum that offers hands-on programs and exhibits. I have to admit many of the businesses there do not interest me that much, but I know there are many people that would find lots of value in the specialty shops available. One unique aspect that Yorktown Beach has to offer is the gorgeous scenic tours. There are a variety of different tours to choose from. During the day you can enjoy a sail on the York River, or experience 18th century homes and revolutionary battlefields. At night there is also a sparkling candle light walking tour. There are even a couple of hotels for people wishing to stay overnight.
Even though right now Yorktown Beach is still considered by many to be a hidden treasure, it will not be long before everyone in Hampton Roads will hear about the wonderful activities and attractions it has to offer. The good thing about Yorktown Beach is that no matter how much it changes, it will always have that relaxing feel to it that attracts people to spend the day along the river bend. If you're lucky you may even catch the Coleman Bridge opening to let a passing by sailboat through the waterway.
