Internet Chat Rooms

Chat is a one-to-many method of talking with others. In a chat room, when you enter a message, it is displayed to everyone in the chat room. Instant Messages are a one-to-one communication. Only the person to whom you are sending the IM will be able to see the message.

Two of the most popular providers of Internet chat rooms are Yahoo! and MSN. Below you will find what each service offers. If you are an AOL member, you will also have access to AOL's exclusive chat rooms. You can find more information on AOL chat here.

Yahoo! chat rooms
Yahoo! offers hundreds of chat rooms, including international chats and user-created chat rooms. Best of all, there's nothing to download and install to be able to chat.

How to start chatting
  1. Go to Yahoo! Chat at http://chat.yahoo.com/ and enter your Yahoo! ID and password.
  2. If you have more than one alias, choose the one you want to use in this chat session. To do this, click the "add/change profile" link and then click on "Make Default" next to the name you would like to use. Click on "Finished Editing" when done to save your changes and return to Chat.
  3. Select an area in which you want to begin chatting.
  4. Choose your software.
  5. Press the "Enter Chat Room" button and begin chatting.

MSN Chat
With MSN Chat, you can hold text-based conversations in real time over the Internet. There are several categories of chat rooms, or you can create your own. When entering an MSN chat room for the first time, you are prompted to download and install the MSN Chat software.
