LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I too have seen the posts for bikes on Broadway. Also, I have seen the racks, or at least some, in the parking Bicycle Parking Signstructure. About a year ago I saw they banned bikes from being locked up along the west side of the driveway entrance into parking structure at Broadway and 3rd street. I used to park my bike there because it seemed safer(more people around and more visible. It strikes me now that perhaps a way the City of Santa Monica could assist bicycling more friendly in Santa Monica by requiring parking structures (especially those doing business with the public) to have bicycle parking signage at all entrances with brief direction on where the bike racks are located(maybe also even and arrow to show location. I found this pic at http://members.aol.com/rmoeuradot/200x200/guide/D4-3.gif . This site had several Slippery when wet bicycle signother bicycle specific signs at his site. To see them all go to http://members.aol.com/rcmoeur/bikesign.html . One other sign I liked was the slippery when wet sign.

Also, I found a site with shirts for sale in Australia. Interesting shirts from Australia. One shirt shows "Share the Road" and other says "TAXPAYER!" with bicycle symbol. They charging $7(Australian) plus post. (ref: http://users.chariot.net.au/~gloria/fishshop.html )

I found interesting document illustrating Bicycle Signs (40 plus), including descriptions and pictures, and also illustrations and descriptions of legal requirements for bike lanes (see: http://www.ctre.iastate.edu/pubs/itcd/Bicycles.pdf )

Here is what one touring bicyclist from Berlin Germany has to say about Santa Monica: portrait, 4.3k"When entering Los Angeles Santa Monica youth hostel, 8.1kfrom the north, one first enters Santa Monica. I have no idea what Santa Monica is doing in Los Angeles because it's the exact opposite - pleasant clean streets, not choking with car traffic, and with a main street (Third Street Promenade) that is closed to motor traffic for several blocks. Lots of cool bookstores and sidewalk cafés there, street performers and lots of people there all day and at night. Shops close late. They even have an outdoor farmer's market there, on Thursdays I think. Santa Monica is lovely, and so is the youth hostel one block from Third Street Promenade. The picture shows the courtyard, but they also have lots of reading rooms, a library, game rooms, and everything you could ask for. It's one of the nicest youth hostels I know. (The nicest I know is in Patras, Greece.)
I spent most of the remaining time in Santa Monica, with a few excursions downtown (a very long and unpleasant ride) and to the UCLA area, which is sort of OK but not very interesting. Just south of Santa Monica is Venice Beach, which I suppose is a must-see for Los Angeles visitors because.." (Thomas Driemeyer )(ref: www.bitrot.de/bike_sfla.html )

What Cycling in Berlin is like: "Berliners enjoy cycling all-year round and the city accommodates- cyclists by providing excellent cycle paths which isolate cyclists both from cars and from pedestrians. You are also allowed to take your bicycle on the U- and S-Bahn, just check which train compartment has the bicycle sign and if anyone happens to be standing there they will usually make way for you and your bike. Cycle paths are extensive in West Berlin but the Eastern half still needs to catch up and the standard of roads lags behind. With the amount of road and building work going on it can be a challenging ride!
Bikes need an underground ticket, too."

Bicycle Boulevards network in Santa Monica?!?Bicylce Boulevard Sign
"Berkeley, California (Tuesday, February 13, 2001) –  This week the City takes the first step towards implementing its network of seven bicycle boulevards.  A system of new purple bicycle boulevard signs, many with directional information for cyclists, is being installed and tested out on Hillegass and Bowditch streets, and some nearby streets. The City hopes that the development of its bicycle boulevard network of low-traffic volume streets, where bicycle safety and efficiency are enhanced, will promote bicycling and improve bicycle safety..."
