And here is the pictures of the intersection:
This is the NE corner of University and HW84 looking North up University
This is the NE corner of University and HW84 looking East up HW 84
This is the NE corner of University and HW84 looking East up HW84 at
right turn lane traffic
A problem with the lights being so close to the intersection is pedestrians
cannot see the signals. While there are pedestrian signals going
in, if they should be burned out (or not operational as they currently
are as they are being installed) the pedestrian is not capable of knowing
if the light has changed. Because right turn traffic is fairly fast
and furious at this intersection, not being able to know when the light
is red is just as good as just walking/running when traffic looks free.
A bad thing to do.
This is the NE corner of University and HW84 looking North up University
from the South side of WEST BOUND HW84. Note the RIGHT TURN traffic
just rushes through and does not pay much attention to the pedestrian intersection.
ZIP, ZIP, ZIP. Turn on RED means stop, look and then turn. Nope
not here!
And they are stacked up waiting to zoom through without stopping!
OK. Now I got a question. What happened to the bike lane?
This area looks wide enough.
And if I look South, I see an 8 foot sidewalk that could be made smaller
and a bike lane could be placed there. And that *IS* what they plan
to do on University North of Sunrise. Why did they not do it here?
BTW just past the second light that you can see way in the back of this
picture is where a bike lane ends!?!?! Why is it not going through
this intersection????
OK. Now for the bad news. This is the University/HW 84 intersection
at the SE corner. Pedestrians LOOK OUT! Note a traffic island with a signal
(note the signal is turned to the left or East because it has not yet been
activated). Look at the far side. There are no control lights
or push buttons for pedestrians!
Just look at that traffic waiting to rush down on the pedestrians!
Also take a close look at the concrete retaining wall. Now look at
the far left. See the edge of the sidewalk on the far side?
Now do you think anyone can see around the retaining wall to know if the
truck will go speeding through the turn lane? The answer is NO.
Again, while I'm at it, why did we not reduce the 8 foot sidewalk and
put in bike lanes?
OK, back to the pedestrian problem... If I was standing next
to those palms I'd be jumping up and down trying to get the cars to stop
and let me cross (with the light even!!!!).
Cars, cars, cars...
Made it to the island.
Whoa, where did he come from? OK. See, I'm not the only
one who uses these roads!
OK. Now I'm officially at the SE corner of University and
East HW 84. Look now much of blind spot I've got. Now
think. Those cars will be coming around that corner at 40mph or more!
And here they come.
This side walk is just way too hidden from the cars!
Let's walk around to see why this retaining wall is here.
Oh, well, um. I'm not sure why the wall could not be a little
narrower. There is a good deal of soil between it and the on ramp.
Note again on the bike lane stuff. If the wall was squared up a bit,
not only would the pedestrains hiding around the wall be more visible,
there would be more room for that bike lane!
OK. No traffic, Good. Let me hop out into the lane and see if
I can see my bike. Not really. Pedestrians have no chance to
try to stop a car traveling at 40 mph into this turn to allow them to cross
to the island (where they have to get just to even push the cross walk!).
BTW that pedestrian crosing sign doesn't help. Maybe if it had a
flashing light on it.
For a reference, this sign is where I'm standing.
OK. I followed the sidewalk around to the COSTCO. Look another
sidewalk but I have to hop two curbs to get to it.
But wait, instead of putting the cross walk straight through, it is
moved up 20 feet. What the heck is that about?
OK. South of the interesection of danger I found this little problem.
As I look North I see a bike lane, OK that;s cool.
But wait, what the heck is this? The bike lane dissapears and
then re-appears. Now that doesn't seem right.
This wierd striping is just North of this street on the West side.
And look, here it is again at a different spot?!
Hey someone asked about this. Well here it is. A BUS STOP
in a TURN LANE. At least that is what this looks like because this
slab of concrete has a connecting side walk (you can't see it but it's
there connecting to the main sidewalk).
OK. Pedestrians seem safe on the West side of University and HW84.
But again I gotta ask the simple question. Why didn't we narrow or
in this case MOVE the sidewalk and make room for the bike lanes?
Again, Pedestrians look safe on the West side of the intersection.
Look! Room for a bike lane if done right!
Oh wait. Pedestrians have a problem. While they are safe crossing
the intersection, the sidewalk doesn't go anywhere! Note the well worn
foot/bike path indicating that SEVERAL pedestians do travel this way!
And they have to hop over this guard rail!
Honest, I didn't wear this path. Actually this will be my first time
traveling on it!
At least it ends up at this nice sholder.
Oops, now I have to figure out how to get across the on ramp to 595.
Look at those cars!
Where to go?
From the RAMP side.
What if the sidewalk crossed the ramp up here to the other side?
Then a sidewalk could be put in from here to the access road.
A picture across the ramp.
Look here. If the sidewalk follows the right-of-way fence then
it lines up with an existing sidewalk!
And this sidewalk looks like it is just waiting to connect up to such
a sidewalk
This left turn lane looks dangerous.
This is from that sidewalk that everhthing would line up with.
Now if there were only pedestrian cross walk stripes!
