This page covers problems with the intersection at the SE corner of University Blvd and Broward Blvd in Plantation FL.

Here is the list of PEDESTRIAN problems:

Walking from the South on the SE side of University as you approach the intersection you must negotiate several concrete poles in the middle of a 4 foot sidewalk. This limites you to a two foot gap between the roadway and the pole.
Waiting at the SE corner of University and Broward to cross North you stand behind a concrete pole (You stand NORTH of this pole so you are invisible to cars traveling North).
As you wait to travel NORTH on the SE corner, you must be aware that the North bound traffic wanting to turn EAST has their own SLIP LANE which is not limited by a signal and does not have to YEILD to you (no signs indicating pedestrians entering roadway other than two white stripes on the road). Pedestrians basically have to step out from behind the concrete pole and pray the cars see them.
While standing on the SE corner, there is no PED CROSSING button to control the SLIP LANE *OR* any traffic. The pedestrian must take a "leap of faith" to get to the traffic island on the other side of the SLIP lane. Only on the island can the pedestrian push a button that controls the signal lights.

This is also looking south. Note the WALK sign is on however the red truck is in a SLIP LANE and has no lights on his side to stop him so pedestrians can get off of the island and continue South.

This picture was taken while standing on the traffic island looking SOUTH.

This picture was also taken from the island note that the van has no signals or yeilds for the pedestrians on the island and also note the pedestrians have no lights or yeilds to help them cross this highspeed lane.

This picture is just South of the SE corner looking NORTH. Note how narrow the sidewalk is due to the concrete pole placement. Also note no cross walk signs visible or any lights or signs to indicate to traffic of the pedestrian entry into the SLIP lane.

This picture is on the SE corner looking South. I am standing where a pedestrain would need to be to see if it is clear to run to the island. There are no controls on the pole or lights for the pedestrian to control traffic. Also note that I am standing at the foot of the wheelchair ramp, inches from traffic, so I can see around the pole. Not idea by any means.
