The idiotic American 'War on Drugs' now has a new warrior for
the cause in the form of Edmonton Mayor Bill Smith. Concern over
recent drug-related shootings prompted the good Mayor Smith to
speak out in no uncertain terms: "To those people who seek profit
from the drug trade, and to those who support the drug trade by
purchasing drugs, get out of Edmonton, and get out of Alberta.
... The call for action is for everybody to realize it's every-
body's problem, and it's going to require everybody to help
with the solution. The police can only do so much."
.
Mayor Bill then went on to describe what he means by everybody
helping. He called upon the "judges to impose tougher penalties,
the government of Canada to keep marijuana illegal, educators to
have zero tolerance for drugs in schools, and parents to watch
their children for changes in behavior ... the premier and
solicitor general to give police the resources they need to wipe
out the drug trade in Alberta, service organizations to help
with anti-drug education programs, and recreational drug users
to stop dabbling in substances that support organized crime."
.
But even that is not enough to do the job. "All of us," he
said, "need to declare war on drugs in Alberta and Canada,
and we need to support the police right across this country."
-- all quotes from the Edmonton Journal, October 10 (2003)
.
The mayor's 'final-solution' is, apparently, well thought out
and feasible. The wide-ranging war strategy is firmly based
upon the well-worn methods of mind-numbing propaganda and
an irresistible gestapo force. But the inherent futility of the
whole war-on-drugs mindset is revealed by its weakest link: the
need to *export* all drug sellers, buyers, and users (eg. send
them all to Vansterdam maybe :). Thus while many people are well
aware that this sort of ultimatum approach is highly impractical,
and very unlikely to cause the hoped-for exodus, the appeal to
'get out of town' is actually blatantly unrealistic. It is, in
fact, little more than a sign of extreme desperation.
.
Moreover, the latest national statistics show that marijuana use
is actually *gaining* in popularity, such that pot-smoking among
the under-25 crowd is reaching levels not seen since the stoned-
seventies. Oh ho! And what are we to make of that, eh? Well, for
one thing, it means that teenagers are just not stupid enough to
fall for all that anti-marijuana bullshit that the establishment
keeps throwing at them. All that money spent on anti-marijuana
propaganda is just as wasted as all the millions invested in the
police and their gestapo-methods. But they keep on throwing
good money after bad, because the ignorant and pig-headed
ones just don't know what else to do! :(
.
And so while many are of the opinion that smoking a joint is
somehow the equivalent of shooting a cop in the chest, the logic
of this connection (I must confess) entirely escapes me. Indeed,
the whole war-on-drugs campaign strikes me as being something
right out of the Middle Ages. It's something that both the
Nazis and the Holy Inquisition would quite approve of, I'm sure.
Thus it falls to the offensive one to offer up a realistic and
workable solution; indeed the *only* solution that *will* work!
.
And the first step, the opening volley (if you will), in this
sad war-on-drugs is the fundamental realization that the war on
drugs is nothing other than a war upon ourselves. It is much
like a civil war that tears a society apart from within. And
the violence of this war is NOT caused by the drugs, but by
the violence of dark and ignorant minds who hate and fear that
which they do not know (and hence disapprove of). The police
are merely the shock-troops of these freedom-haters, and
violence is the only reaction that they are capable of.
.
Mayor Smith's military campaign is therefore basically a call
for even greater levels of violence to manifest throughout
society as a whole. More power to the gestapo so that they
can increase their levels of overt violence. More hatred and
ignorance for the judges so that they can increase the level
of violent injustice in the courts. More money for service
orgs so that they can increase the lies and stupidity of their
futile and meaningless propaganda. More suspicion and anger
for the parents so that we can increase the levels of violence
and mistrust within families. And so on and so forth . . .
.
Stop it. For Christ's sake, just stop it! This is *NOT* the way
to go. There is no war here. There is only the illusion of war.
It's an illusion that is used to justify the existing violence
that is in no way justifiable. The real enemy here is not pot,
but the willful ignorance of stupid people. If teens are smoking
more pot today, more power to them, I say. It's not like they're
ever going to overdose on the stuff; even if there are always a
few bozos who are determined to try.
.
On the other hand, one can very easily drink oneself to death,
if you put your mind to it. Is the war on alcohol part of the
war on drugs? Hell no! But alcohol is far more damaging than
marijuana is. Oh, but lets not let the facts get in the way of
our righteous holy-war against pot. Thus lies and hypocrisy
are the true foundations of the war on drugs; and everybody
but the mayor and his gestapo know it!
.
You want to stop your poor innocent coppers from getting killed
while doing your dirty work for you? Here's how you do it: First
you legalize pot. Then you hand over production and distribution
to the tobacco companies. And then they sell their product in
liquor stores right next to the bud-light. This procedure will
take the industry straight out of the hands of criminals, and
provide the government with an immense new source of
taxable revenue. It will thereby remove billions of dollars out
of the crime vaults, and place them smack into the public
treasury, where (I dare say) they rightfully belong.
.
Now all of this is perfectly feasible and perfectly *do-able*.
Alas, it requires that we all turn a deaf ear to those arrogant
swine to the south of us; and to their mindless puppets among
us. IF you *really* want it to happen, we can end this phony
war-on-drugs right now without firing even a single shot! The
only question that remains is this: Do Canadians have the balls
to do the right thing, or will they persist in the pathetic
delusion that 'pot is evil'?

cybrwurm say: I appreciate your concerns fellas (if not the
insult), but you have to appreciate that only the federal
government is in a position to make the necessary changes. As
long as the anti-pot people feel that they hold the moral high-
ground, then they will sabotage any efforts to legalize the weed.
And while the government cares little about the immorality of the
current draconian anti-pot laws, they are certainly sensitive to
the call of mammon. Waving potential billions of dollars under
the noses of corporations and politicians is one sure way of at
least attracting their attention. Moreover, it is necessary to
get the corporations involved because not everyone has the time
or resources or desire to grow their own. So while I'm not too
crazy about paying taxes to toke, we have to be realistic about
this matter. There will be no legalization without taxation.
That's just the way things are, and we have to make the best
of it. The lesser of two evils, if you know what I mean.
