ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

The North Carolina General Assembly created Rockingham County from the northern portion of Guildford County on December 29, 1785. The county was named for Charles Watson Wentworth, the Second Marquis of Rockingham, who served as Great Britain's Prime Minister from 1765-1766 and in 1782.

Historical Collections
The Madison Public Library branch, built in 1935, houses one of the finest genealogy collections in the area. The Linda Vernon Genealogy Room has a wide collection of North Carolina and Virginia census, marriage and death records, wills, deeds, Revolutionary and Civil War records, family history books and county heritage books. Many records as well as early county newspapers are on microfilm. Family Tree Maker, a genealogy computer program, is also available for public use.
LATTER DAY SAINTS
The Family History Center is open from 9 a.m., to noon, 1-4 p.m., 6-8 p.m. every Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4751 N.C. 14, one mile south of Eden. Access to thousands of records. Other times by appointment, call the Center at 336-623-7154 and leave a message.
