Cold War

A man sitting on the Berlin Wall, which divided East and West Germany from 1961 to 1989, raises a fist and cheers the dismantling of the wall. The wall was a symbol of the Cold War struggle between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and its allies, which included East Germany, and the United States and its allies, which included West Germany.

Overview of the Cold War

In 1948, following Soviet bans on all water, rail, and highway traffic between Berlin and West Germany, the British and U.S. occupation authorities organized a system of air transport, known as the Berlin airlift, to supply the Western-occupied sectors of the city. Planes landed up to every 45 seconds with relief supplies for the 2 million occupants of those sectors. The Soviets lifted their blockade in 1949.
