TANK'S TAKE 4/10/01 |
A great accomplishment but not a grand slam |
This weekend one of the greatest individual accomplishments in the history of sports
took place at the Masters in August, GA. Tiger Woods won the prestigious
tournament for the second him in his career to give him his 4th consecutive
Major Tournament victory. This is a feat that many thought would never happen,
and may never happen again. Sure Tiger can go on to win the US Open, and increase
his streak, but for now he holds every major grand slam title. However, this is not a Grand Slam. For it to be a slam Tiger would have to win all 4 majors, the Masters in April, the Us Open in June, The British Open in July, and the PGA in August in all in |

so it was not a grand slam. Winning this year's Masters does not complete it. It
is just the 1st step on the way to possibly winning this year's Grand Slam, and
with the way Tiger dominates it would be tough to bet against him. If Tiger
is to win the slam this year it will be the greatest accomplishment in the
history of sports. It is clear beyond any debate that Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world now, and over the last 20 years. However, where does he belong in golf's history? Is he all ready the greatest golfer ever? The answer to the last question is not yet. However Tiger at the age of 25 is already |

in the top 5, and he has 20 years left to dominate the PGA tour. Currently the number
one golfer of all-time is Jack Nicklaus who has won 18 majors in his career.
Tiger has all ready won 6 majors so he is one 1/3 of the way to the top spot.
Unless, something unforeseen happens it will be hard to believe that Tiger will
not pass Nicklaus. When he does it will be the coronation and that is when Tiger
will become the greatest golfer of all time, and at the pace he is on that
could come very quickly. |
