Korey Stringer 1974-2001 |
Not many people knew who Korey Stringer was, but he was one of the best at the anonymous
position of Right Tackle. Stringer made his first Pro Bowl last season,
and came to camp thinner, and expecting to have the best year of his career. Over
his 6-year career Stringer had consistently raised his level of play and continued
to establish himself as one of the top tackles in the NFL. Has played in
93 of a possible 96 games in his six-year career, and ranks 7th in club history
for starts by a tackle with 91, and started all nine postseason games he has
played in with Minnesota. Over the 1998 and '99 seasons the Stringer, and the
Viking offensive line only allowed a sack every 15.6 pass attempts. Minnesota has
averaged 375.4 net yards per game over the past three seasons. Teamed with right
guard David Dixon gave Minnesota an overpowering presence on the right side. Prior to staring with Vikings Korey Stringer was a Consensus All-America in 1993 & 1994 becoming the first Buckeye offensive lineman to become a two-time All-America since Chris Ward in 1976 and '77. Named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in '93 and '94, and was Ohio State's Most Valuable Player in '94. Stringer was also Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1992 despite only six starts. Korey Stringer is survived by his wijfe Kelci, and his son 3-year-old son Kodie Drew. Stringer, who majored in recreational education at Ohio State was very active in the Twin Cities community through "Viking Super Challenge" at local schools and the St. Paul Public Library. His teammates remember him as fun-loving guy that had a kind heart. The sorrow of his tragic death has sent shockwaves through the rest of the Vikings, and the entire NFL. He will be sorely missed. |
