  The Shimabara Rebellion

The Shimabara Rebellion
It suddenly broke out a peasant uprising in where Kyushu region
We call the Shimabara rebellion
This land had lived many Christian from the first
In the days of the shognate regime crack down ruthlessly on a Christian
Feudal lords persecuted relentlessly them
Throw into the sea while they live on
A punishment of burn to death at the stake
Be notorious for cruelty in Unzen inferno
On the other side severe exaction of farm rent
Peasant who can't pay was tortured and was killed for a warning
With a few years bad crop, so peasants was starving
In that time spread out a wonderful prophecy
"When people is on the point of the downfall,
A boy who is sixteen will be saving a devout in Christ"
And just like that Amakusa Siro Tokisada came up
He is a handsome boy and kept his own baptismal name
He did some miracles so that many believers followed at him as our Saviour
First of all peasants killed a local magistrate who was trying to stop church service October 25th in 1637
In this chance many peasants rise in rebellion against feudal lord Matukura
They attack hard at his castle after 2 days
Tokugawa shognate was surprised at a big scale riot
Then set about quell an uprising
He ordered an expeditionary force at each domain
The whole force 45,000 head for Shimabara
So Amakusa Siro decided to be besieged old Hara castle to confront that
Where place is surrounded by the sea on three sides
Farmers made a board fence on the precipice to aim at shognate army
Leader made a church at highest point in the castle to issue an order
So rebellion power 37,000 include child, woman and old over 12,000
Their strategy is the way of throw down a stone from the top
Shognate army attacked twice but a few thousand casualties
Beside a commander Itakura is killed in action too
Next a go-getter Matudaira is appointed as a commender
He made a change in an assault course to cut off the supply of food
Shognate army was up to 120,000 on the middle of February in 1638
From sea side a Dutch warship fire a cannon to the castle
Watertight siege and then run out food and arms
But they say to stand it out own to Amakusa siro and Christianity
Matudaira ordered an all-out attack on February 27th
The rebel fight a defensive battle by using a sickle and scythe
The second fort and third fort fall
Soldiers belong each fief kill one after another even if woman child, old
The battle goes on till 28th next day
In the midday Hara castle fell down
The slaughter kept on after surrender
Woman and child get under cover and survive peasant was killed in all
Shogunate army 2,400 casualties too
Leader Amakusa Siro was beheaded and his head put on public display
A great many dead bodies was exposed around the castle
Flies swarm on the corpse so that color became black around by
The siege 80 days, it end up such a tragedy 37,000 annihilation
People in the castle was all beheaded except an informer
The Shimabara rebellion is reported as a riot of Christian
But there was non-Christian, they submit by peer pressure and compulsion
Outlaw to the national prohibition and the government
Punishment is a matter of course such an idea that they were massacred
Now it is held an excavation at where the main of a castle
In this vicinity the teeth of human come out one after another
It is also found out the simple cross and ball of rosary or medal
If any chance, I would to visit the site of Hara castle in Shimabara
Where is once many peasants fought against the Shougnate army
Sadness of peasants is not considerate at all in feudalism age
History is really tragic thing isn't it!

  Yaoya Ohichi

Edo (Tokyo) in those days where was a castle town biggest in the world
The common people's most dreadful matter was a fire
Japanese house is made of wood, besides crowded in a small place
That why many fire in Edo town, where was occurred nearly every day
The big fire go down in history is numbered over 90
One of fire is called " Ohichi fire" in 1682
This meaning is Yaoya Ohichi she set fire to a house

Ohichi was born as a daughter in Yaoya family where Hongo in 1668
Her house is caught in a big fire on December in 1682
Then her family took refuge at Kichijoji- temple where was Komagome
There she fall in love with a page boy in the temple whose name is Kichisaburo
By and by her family comes back to Hongo
But Ohichi is dying to see him.
So she thinks if it comes to a fire again, she can meet with Kichisaburo
Age 16 Ohich set fire her new house on January in 1683
Just then fire spread about on the wind in a twinkling
The whole Edo town became a sheet of fire

Ohichi is arrested
If she answer her age is younger,

it had a chance to reduce a sentence owe by magistrate's mercy
But she answered in honest " I am 16 years old"
On March in 1683 she is taken around about Edo town
After that go to Suzugamori where is a place of execution
Ohichi 16 years old is burnt at the stake
After an affair Yaoya Ohichi was written by book
Played by the Kabuki or the *Joruri and since then she was well known
*a dramatic narrative chanted to a samisen accompaniment

I am not intend to make a simple tragic love story
A place of execution in Edo period
There was called the execution of a solitary pine tree
This big tree was more than a few hundred years
Before burn to death, Ohich get to ride on a horse comes this way
The rumor got around she gave a glare at this tree
This pine tree was called as "Ohichi glaring pine tree"
In reality her heart is too full for words
Stare at the place in Edo town and could be say good-bye
Punishment of burning to death is easy to die
Because suffocate in a moment so that loose consciousness
No that is not!
Suzugamori execution place was close at the water's edge
So that a strong wind from the sea hit a side blow
At first legs are charred and faint
But it is so hot that regain consciousness and be restored to life
Repeat the same thing on unconsciousness and resuscitation
In case of Yaoya Ohichi it happens a terrific shriek like as a cry of a fierce animal
It is said that reached to a human habitation on the hill was 5 miles away from
Inhabitants tremble violently, slide doors shut, pray to Amida Buddha
And they stopped their ears in a house

A penalty was cruel and severe in old days

Obattalion

Recent Japanese language has "obattalion"
This word is made up as a new word
Japanese (obasan) means a madam
American movie (battalion) was opened to the public before time
Each word united with together
And new word "obattalion" was made
This is now a slang Japanese language every body knows

Once I had moved here condominium
I didn't know in this condo's rule at first time
Because of I am a new comer
It is just when my aunt visited in my home
With her son who run his own car
I didn't get the idea where should I suggest park his car
Anyway I ordered a passage in the parking lot
For a long time we were chatting in my home
Suddenly the horn of car was honked
I hunch so that I got out my home
A couple glared at me
Because their car can't get in the parking space by chance
My aunt 's son move a way his car
But a couple gets very angry to get hampered
I apologized but his wife was taking a sharp look
When my aunt leave here, she is still scolding
It is rather persistent
She should knows I am a new comer in here

She is the very "obattalion"
Japanese (ojisan) means uncle
But a coined word "ojittalion" has not yet
