He thus created mankind, the progenitor being Vasishta. Purusha took Shatarupa to wife, truly a paradox and indeed, Apavas` greatness can be found even in the sky! Oh best Munis! It is by his custom that Shatarupa was produced. She had been austere for a myriad of years, the penance being extremely difficult. The blazing austerity reestablished Purusha as husband. Brahmans! He, Purusha, is truly called Svayambhuva Manu and his seventy one yugas in this world are called an age of man. From Manu Purusha Shatarupa produced Vira, from Vira Kamya produced Priyavrata and Uttanapada.

The beautiful daughter of the progenitor Kardama was called Kamya. Kamya had four sons, Samraj, Kukshi, Viraj and Prabhu. The progenitor Atri adopted the son Uttanapada. From Uttanapada, Sunrita created four sons. The girl of Dharma was the goddess called Sunrita. The beautiful mother of Dhruva produced him by means of the horse sacrifice. The progenitor Uttanapada produced in Sunrita in that manner Dhruva, Kirtimat, Ayushmat and Vasu. Honored brahmans! For three thousand celestial years the illustrious Dhruva wishing to have very great glory suffered penance. Because of that, the powerful progenitor Brahma was pleased and gave him a position equal to himself, immovable and certainly preceding the seven Rishis. Considering his pride, prosperity and greatness, the teacher of the gods zealously sang his praise. `Ah!, this strong penance heard about which has established Dhruva as first before the seven Rishis is marvelous.

From Dhruva, Shlishti and Bhavya were produced in Shambhu. Shlishti impregnated Succhaya with five spotless sons: Ripu, Ripumjaya, Vira, Vrikala and Vrikatejas. From Ripu, Brihati was impregnated with the splendorous Cakshusa. Vairini Pushkarini, the daughter of Viranya, produced Manu Cakshusa from the great souled progenitor. Manu produced ten heroes in Nadvala. Eminent sages! The virgin was progenitor Vairajas`. Kutsa, Puru, Shatadyumna, Tapasvi, Satyavak, Kavi, Agnishtut, Atiratra and Sudyumna, in this manner those nine, and Abhimanyu, the tenth, are the heroes of Nadvala. From Puru, Agneyi produced six sons of great brightness. Anga, Sumansa, Svati, Kratu, Angiras and Maya. From Anga, the mistress Sunitha produced one Vena. Because of Venas` improper conduct, the anger of the Rishis was very great, who for the benefit of the people destroyed his right hand.

A great king was produced from the destroyed hand of Vena. Seeing him, the sages declared: `This king, indeed will make the subjects happiness; he will obtain great splendor and great honor and he will have a bow and armor and resemble a shining flame. With these, Prithu Vainya in that manner ruled the ancient government. He was the first husband of the earth to have rajasuya and abhishikta sacrifices. From him also arose the clever sons of Magadha. Best sages! By those, the cow was filled with milk and grain filled the earth. In a desire for a way of life for the subjects, along with the Devas, Rishis, progenitors, Danavas and certainly Gandharvas, the troops of Apsaras, tribes, virtuous people and even plants and mountains in that manner, into those vessels the earth was as if milked. And from giving the desired milk, by that life was supported. Prithu, at the end of the sacrifice had two sons knowing the law, Antardhi and Patin.

Shikhandini produced Havirdhana from Antardhana. From Havirdhana, Dhishana, daughter of Agneyi, produced six sons: Pracinabarhis, Shukra, Gaya, Krishna, Vraja and Ajina. The lord Pracinabahis was a great progenitor. Best sages! The Havirdhanas were by whom the subjects were raised. The lord Pracinabarhis moved about the dry land of the earth. Indeed! Savarna, daughter of the ocean, was married after fulfilling great penance to the master progenitor. The daughter of Samudra, Savarna was impregnated with ten by Pracinabarhis, all named Pracetas and well versed in archery. Collectively observing the law, they suffered great penance for ten thousand years lying in the sea.

As the Pracetas were engaged in penance, trees covered the unprotected earth diminishing the subjects. The Maruts were not able to move in the air as the sky was covered by trees. Ten thousand years the subjects were not able to be active. Hearing that, all the Pracetas engaged in penance became wrathful, occasioning the creation of wind and fire. The wind then, had dried the uprooted trees. Then they were burned dreadfully by fire. Thus was the wasting of the trees. Hearing about the destroying of the trees then, when something remained of the trees, Soma approached those progenitors, speaking:

`Pracinabarhis` kings! Leave all anger which has made the earth empty of trees and it will calm Agni and the Maruts. This virgin is the best woman of the trees being a jewel. Tatas! And knowing her future she was delivered by me to the womb. Called Marisha, this name was created by the trees in this manner. Eminent ones! The augmenter of the genealogy of the moon will be your wife. Half your essence and half mine essence in this virgin will produce the learned progenitor named Daksha. This that has for the most part been burnt by your fire, indeed, he by that fires` similarity will cause a regrowth of mankinds` being.

Consequently on Somas` advice, they, the Pracetas`, compressing anger, by custom took Marisha of the trees to wife. Honored brahmins! Indeed, from the ten Pracetas and part of Soma the greatly splendorous progenitor Daksha was produced in Marisha. He, Daksha, by mental power created the immovable and moving and certainly two footed, then four footed animals. Afterwards he created females. He gave ten to Dharma and thirteen to Kashyapa, and the rest, named for stars, the master gave to the king Soma. In them gods, birds, cows, serpent people, Daityas, Danavas, Gandharvas and Apsaras and other forms of existence were certainly produced. Brahman chiefs! In consequence mankinds` coming together for copulation commenced, as previously procreation was properly from idea, perception and touch.

The Munis said: `We have heard that the Devas, Danavas and Gandharvas, Uragas, Rakshasas were made possible by the great soul Daksha. Indeed! It is so reported the virtuous Daksha was produced from the thumb of Brahma. Certainly in that manner from the right thumb his wife originated. How did one practicing great penance again find opportunity to be at the state of the Pracetas? This is our doubt Suta, in this case you are able to explain it. Also, how did the son of the daughter of Soma arrive at being their father in law?

Lomaharsana said: `Honored brahmans! Birth and destruction also have always been, in this the Rishis who are learned people are not bewildered. Daksha and these other princes exist from age to age, and certainly again are destroyed. Therein a learned person is not bewildered. Moreover, oldest and youngest, these did not exist previously. Best brahmans! Just penance was extremely important and certainly the principle power. Who understands this immoveable and moving secondary creation of Daksha is prolific, healthy, released from obligation and exalted in the world of light.
