| In Huna, the religion of Early Hawaii, it was taught that each person had two souls. When one died the earthly soul (unihi-pili) remained earth-bound and descended to the underworld. The 'Aumakua (higher soul) ascended to the heavens to rejoin the deceased ancestors. It is also the same name of the god/spirits who acts as psychopomp (guardian) and takes the soul to heaven. This defied ancestral spirit might assume the shape of sharks, owls, rocks, pillars, hawks, dogs, mud hen, rats, mice, eels, catepillars, birds, cowries, clouds, or plants. 'Aumakua warned and repremanded mortals in dreams, visions and calls. Often people would pray and call on their 'Aumakua for guidance and mana (power). Mortals did not eat or harm thier 'Aumakua. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Growing up I have always known that my families 'Aumakua was the Mano (shark). Just recently my tutu (grandfather) passed away. With all of his surviving brothers and sisters at the funeral this is where I learned that my family actually has three different 'Aumakua figures. Along with the Mano was the Pueo (owl) and the Puhi (Serpent). One of my great uncles even designed a crest/band to represent our 'Aumakua in which I have tattooed on my left arm with the Hawaii state flag. There are many family stories where our Aumakua protected, guided, and even warned us. Someday I will share some of these stories with you when given permission by that individual. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. The two horizantal lines represents the tail of the sea serpent 2. The black triangles represent the teeth of the mano 3. The white triangles represent the eyes of the pueo. 4. And again the two horizantal lines represent the tail of the sea serpent. |
