Your optometrist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related conditions. Among the types of treatment optometrists use are prescription glasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, low vision aids, and pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of ocular disease. During the exam, the doctor also assesses general health conditions. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and arteriosclerosis are often detected during vision exams.
