What is a personal computer?
A personal computer is a type of microcomputer that is commonly used by people. The normal PC consist of hardware, software other peripheral devices.
Components of The Computer System
The basic computer system carries out the following four elements: input, processing, output and storage.
Input
This is process whereby data and instructions is placed into the computer through the use of input devices into a form that the computer is able to process it. Examples of input devices are keyboard, light pen and mouse.
Processing
This is the data and instructions are made into a meaningful form. The computer processes data by means of the control and the arithmetic logic unit. After data has been inputted into the computer the control unit fetches the data, interprets it and passes it on to other units. The instruction is received by the arithmetic logic unit that processes the data. The Arithmetic logic unit processes data that involves calculation. Example multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
Output
Output is the presenting of information in a form that is understood by the user which is done through the use of output devices. Example speakers and monitors.
Storage
This where the computer retains data and instructions temporarily or permanently. The types of storage are: primary storage and secondary storage. Primary storage is where the computer stores data and instructions temporarily and once the power is turned off all data and instructions is lost. Example
Random Access Memory.
Secondary storage/ Auxiliary storage is used to store data and instructions permanently and thus it is used as a back up. Example floppy disk.
