Setting up a bootable USB Device

Note:This WILL make a bootable USB device, IF YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

It will not, however, boot NT,2000,2003,or XP. Using one of the files below, you CAN access the drive. This only boots to a DOS prompt.

If does not work for your system, then that has to do with the individual BIOS and motherboards. Contact your manufacturer.

I will not respond to e-mails saying "It doesn't boot my XFD 455 Tower computer". If it is capable of being booted from a USB device, this process will work!!.

Contact your manufacturer

Files Needed:

NOTICE!!!!!!!All files are in ZIP Format. Must be unzipped to work correctly!

Here is a link for a unzipping program: http://www.winzip.com

This is the file for the Windows 98SE Bootdisk: win98se.zip

And for PART.EXE PART.zip

This is the HP USB Utility SP27213.zip

And to access NTFS HDD's ntfsinst.zip

Here are the instructions:

A: Objects needed:

B: Step by step instructions:

  1. Install the HP Utility on system with floppy drive (VERY easy, just follow prompts)

  2. Run the 98SE Bootdisk image file(Will create a 98SE Boot floppy).Leave this floppy in drive.

  3. Go to Start>Programs(Or All Programs)>Hewlett-Packard Company>HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

  4. Set Filesystem as "FAT" (NOT FAT32!!!!!!!)

  5. Check "Create a DOS Startup Disk"

  6. In the "Use DOS filesystem files at" box, type "A:\"

  7. Click "Start". When done, click "close"

  8. Go to Start>run Type "Command" in the box, click "OK"

  9. Type "A: " then 'enter'

  10. Type "copy *.* a: usbdriveletter:" then 'enter{where usbdriveletter is the drive letter,example: 'E' }

  11. If any dialogs appear asking to overwrite files, type "no". When files are done copying, type "exit",then 'enter'.Box will close

  12. Go to 'My Computer',then Go to USB drive

  13. Go to "Tools>Folder Options" Go to View tab. Check the Show hidden files and folders' option. UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files. Say yes to any dialogs, and click OK

  14. Right click the Autoexec.bat file, and choose 'Edit'. Find the line that begins with "PATH=", and replace the "a:" to "c:". Exit and save changes to file.

  15. Other files you may need to edit are "Config.sys" and "Setramd.bat". Change ANY references from "A:" to "C:"

  16. Copy PART.EXE to the USB drive

  17. There you go.It will now boot as a Windows 98SE Startup disk, with all DOS commands working.
After the boot, you can use PART.EXE to make the partitions and make the HDD bootable
(Even if its Drive2,something you CANNOT do with FDISK) (Formatting, tho, seems not to work so gooduse the DOS version for that,ie 'Format C: /s")
