QUAKER VERNON FAMILY

First Generation

Thomas VERNON came from Stanthorne, Cheshire, England a little before or with the proprietary in 1682 with his two brothers Randal and Robert. They were joint First Purchasers of 1500 acres. Thomas and Randal held adjoining tracts in Nether Providence, Chester (now Delaware) Co., PA. At a meeting of William Penn's commissions, 11 1st mo. 1680/1, a "warrant was ordered to lay out to Robert, Thomas and Randal Vernon, their lotts and liberty land." It was not until 1701/2 that the survey was completed. For a time the Chester Monthly Meeting, Society of Friends, met in their homes. Thomas married 13 May 1669 Warrington, Lancashire, England to Elizabeth MAXWELL who died 24 3rd month 1714 in Chester Co., PA. He died 25 10th mo. 1698 also in Chester Co., PA.


Second Generation

Thomas and Elizabeth Vernon were the parents of:

Thomas VERNON born circa 1670 who resided in Nether Providence, Chester Co., PA as early as 1702. He married 13 8th mo 1702 at Chester Meeting House to Lydia ROLFE (RALFE). Thomas made his will 27 Dec 1752 which was proved 21 Nov 1754 Chester Co., PA. He died 11 4th mo 1754. The will mentions land he held in Marlborough, a lot in Chester, and a plantation in Providence which contained 95 acres to be inherited by his son Nathaniel after his wife's decease. His widow Lydia made her will 16 Apr 1773 at North Providence and it was proved 7 Nov 1774.


Third Generation

The children of Thomas Vernon and Lydia Rolfe were:

1. Thomas VERNON born 23 5th mo 1703 Chester Co., PA. On 26 6th mo 1734 he requested a certificate to Concord MM to marry Lettice (KEY) CHAMBERLAIN, widow of John Chamberlain. He died about 1760.

2. Lydia VERNON born 10 1st mo. 1706 Chester Co., PA; died by 1740. She married 4 6th mo 1728 at Chester Meeting House to Nathaniel RING whose first wife was Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Coebourn.

3. Jonathan VERNON born 3 4th mo. 1707 Chester Co., PA; died young.

4. Jonathan VERNON born 11 6th mo 1708 Chester Co., PA; died 1785. He married 19 8th mo 1738 to Anne (CLOUD) ENGLE, a widow.

5. Nathan VERNON born 10 7th mo. 1710. He was probably died young and was not named in the wills of either parent.

6. Esther VERNON born 10 8th mo. 1712 Chester Co., PA. She married out to James MILNER 24 Jun 1741 at Swede Church, Delaware. She married (2) by 1751 to Abraham ASHTON.

7. Nathaniel VERNON born 5 12th mo 1714 Chester Co., PA. He married 13 7th mo 1744 to Mary (ENGLE) SALKELD.

8. Hannah VERNON born 3 1st mo. 1716/7 Chester Co., PA and married 2 12th mo. 1744 to John CALVERT, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Calvert.

9. Mordecai VERNON born 3 2nd mo. 1720 Chester Co., PA and died circa 1792. He fathered the illegitimate daughter of Ann KEY circa 1744. He married to a woman named Mary and had Lydia, Elizabeth, Mary, Mordecai, Thomas, James and Hannah Vernon.
